Dovizioso winner of the Austrian MotoGP Grand Prix 2020
Like a snub to his future ex-employer, Andrea Dovizioso wins the Austrian MotoGP GP – marked by a huge crash between Zarco and Morbidelli – ahead of Joan Mir and Jack Miller. Debrief, results and provisional classification at the world championship.
Andrea Dovizioso, and last year after a against Marc Marquez, at the end of the season but has clearly not lost any of his motivation !
- MNC special file : Everything you need to know about the Austrian GP 2020
After an excellent start by Jack Miller from second place on the grid, Fabio moved down from 3rd to 8th place. Pol Espargaro and Joan Mir join the leading group, followed by Quartararo and Rossi. Miller maintains a 3-tenth lead over the chasing group but melts quickly…
Fear in the 9th lap
In the 5th lap, Quartararo failed under braking and went into the gravel while Pol Espargaro took the lead in the race ahead of Miller, Mir, Dovizioso and Oliviera a little further behind who had the best lap on the track! Pol Espargaro tries to take some air on his chasing trio and Dovi passes Miller for second position to catch up with the KTM official.
Suddenly at the start of the 9th lap, there was a huge crash involving Zarco and Morbidelli: one of the motorcycles went into a spin but the other stayed on its wheels and continued its mad race, before hitting an airfence and rolling off in turn! The bike crosses the track where the group of pursuers arrives and grazes Rossi like a missile a few centimeters away! Morbidelli is evacuated on a stretcher as Zarco walks home…
Race neutralized and second start
The race is neutralized, all the drivers return to their boxes … to the chagrin of Pol Espargaro! Rossi slipped away and shakes his head as he gets off his motorcycle…
20 minutes later, hostilities resumed for 20 laps with a new starting grid established according to the positions in the 8th lap: Pol Espargaro, Andrea Dovizioso and Jack Miller are in the front row. The KTM official took the advantage ahead of Miller and Dovi, but the Ducati Pramac rider took first place before the end of the lap and started to widen the gap with a fastest lap of 1’24.368 thanks to a choice of bold tires: soft front and rear.
Fourth, Joan Mir – leads the group of pursuers. Fabio Quartararo is only 13th.
Dovi pulls out the big attack and takes a lap in 1’24.342 to try to get rid of Espargaro and catch up with Miller, while Rins places his Suzuki in third position at the expense of the official RC16 rider: Pol Espargaro shows signs annoyance, he who was in the lead before the interruption … and fell a few minutes later, mown by Miguel Oliveira after having widened his trajectory !
Nine laps from the finish, Dovi takes the lead ahead of Miller and Rins who never give up and take second in front of Miller! A lap later, he attacks Dovizioso and takes the first place … but he asks too much of his front tire and falls !
At 7 laps to go, Dovizioso finds himself in the lead ahead of Miller and Mir, while Brad Binder at 2.7 seconds leads the group of pursuers ahead of Rossi, Nakagami, Petrucci, Crutchlow, Quartararo, Lecuona, Aleix Espargaro and Smith.
Third with three laps from the finish with more than 3 seconds on Binder, Joan Mir is not content to secure his first MotoGP podium: he puts pressure on Miller – who seems to have reached the end of his soft tires and tries to close all doors – and manage to cross the finish line in second position at the very last moment !
Maverick Viñales, qualified in and best time in warmup this morning, seems not to have managed to refocus after the crash of the first part and finishes tenth behind Valentino Rossi 5th, Takaaki Nakagami 6th, Danilo Petrucci 7th, Fabio Quartararo 8th and Iker Lecuona 9th…
All to follow tomorrow on MNC: stay tuned !
