BMW R 1200 GS drives as if by magic

BMW wants to increase the safety of motorcyclists, but also the driving pleasure. A self-driving prototype based on a BMW R 1200 GS, which was presented at the BMW test site in Miramas, shows what approaches are being pursued.

E.A BMW R 1200 GS that drives without a driver – what’s the point? Clearly, it communicates with the “local bakery app” and the building services, fetches the rolls in the neighboring village on Sunday morning and hands them over to the butler robot, who then serves them to bed. Or it automatically warms up the engine, suspension elements, brakes and tires so that the driver can get right into the first corner. Ultimately, you can even send them on tour alone with your buddies if you don’t have the time yourself.

Fully equipped test vehicle

Nonsense, all nonsense. In fact, the self-driving GS is part of a development of active driving aids. All previous electronic driving aids are reactive: an ABS intervenes after the driver has started to brake, a traction control after the driver has started to accelerate in an inclined position, a wheelie control only when he has opened the tap so far that the front wheel is opened takes off.

In contrast to this, active systems should be activated before the driver does. For example, apply a slight braking or steering impulse when approaching a dangerous situation to warn the driver. If a motorcycle is equipped with the technology it needs, little additional equipment is required to be able to drive it yourself. The BMW developers have equipped their test vehicle with this technology.

GS drives off independently

The GS starts up independently, implements steering impulses and throttle commands via remote control, and can brake and stop. However, this has to be done in a slight right-hand slant, because the automatically folding side stand is placed there. If she is to start again afterwards, she needs human help. A double-sided stand or a gyroscopic top that stabilizes you when you stand at a traffic light has not yet been applied. So there is still some work to be done before the bread rolls can be fetched autonomously.
