What can happen

We like to suppress it, but riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than playing chess. Ex-World Cup racing driver Dirk Heidolf (32) shows us what can happen.

06/23/2008

The Saxon Dirk Heidolf rode in the 250cc class of the motorcycle world championship from 2002 to 2007. In these years and the time before, a lot came together: stuck motors, loosened radiator hoses with a personal slide as a result, opponents who involuntarily clear you and of course the exhaustion and overexcitation of physical limits – and thus a lot of falls at the highest level. As in time lapse, Dirk’s injury history shows what can happen to a motorcyclist in the course of a biker’s life. With a few very important differences: Dirk only fell on a cordoned-off route with a corresponding run-off zone; he was always wearing the best possible protective clothing; and he could be sure that medical help was always on hand.
In his opinion, the most dangerous form of fall: highsider, i.e. a situation in which the rear wheel slips sideways for a moment, gets grip again, the rider is thrown off the motorcycle like a doll high over the handlebars and lands accordingly hard. Similarly intense injuries: falls in which you cannot get away from the machine quickly enough and – in Dirk’s case from a motocross training machine – the handlebars rammed into your stomach. A torn spleen and bruises on the liver, kidneys and bladder were the consequences. Okay, what do I care about a racer’s injuries? This could now be the question from Otto normal drivers. A clear answer: Just go inside and consider whether the summer time-in-T-shirt-to-the-bakery tour is really a good idea. To a safe 2008 season!

Cleared from the opponent, fell over his motorcycle: Broken shoulder, one week to the operation in the hospital (among other things, plate inserted); races again after another three weeks.

Falling during motocross training, getting handlebars in your stomach: internal organs badly injured, spleen and 20 percent of left lung removed; four weeks in hospital, after another three weeks racing again.

Fall while training on the Sachsenring: fallen on the hands and broken the scaphoid bone on the right, that is the worst healing wrist bone; after five weeks start at the German GP.

Motor stuck in Brazil: Fall inevitable, the torn elbow had to be sewn. This is a “triviality” for racing drivers and does not normally result in long breaks.

Typical slip-up: Even with the best protective clothing, long asphalt slides at very high speeds can lead to second-degree burns. The leg would have been gone in jeans.

Collected Works: As the most complicated joints in the human body, the knees almost always get something off when they fall violently. Ligament tears are often the result. The healing process takes a long time after knee surgery.

Seat position for racing drivers and normal drivers

Tense? Racing drivers actually sit uncomfortably on their work equipment, but they hardly suffer from tension. It’s all about variety: You constantly change your sitting position; Braking and accelerating stress and relieve the hands and arms, they are always in motion. With normal drivers, however, bending the wrists and tensing the forearm muscles can lead to numbness in the fingers (carpal tunnel syndrome).

Urination to urinate while riding a motorcycle

Fear pee? Why does motorcycling lead to an increased urge to urinate in many people? The (positive) stress does it. More adrenaline is produced, which causes increased blood sugar mobilization in the blood and thus improved kidney blood flow – puller alarm!
