Bimota DB5S 1100 (2007) in the driving report

Easy poem

For the small but fine craft business Bimota, it is a huge opportunity to hit the hearts of Italo fans with the 1100 V2 two-valve engine in a pretty sports motorcycle.

D.he gap in the Ducati model range has long been gaping. The Bolognese make a lot of monsters, multistrada and now also Hypermotard, but not a classic super sports car with their 1100 V2 two-valve engine. This is the opportunity for Bimota.

Nothing better could have happened to the beautiful, air-cooled, classically ribbed Ducati-Desmo than to be driven from Bologna to Rimini in a van and land there on a workbench. As in grandfather’s time, a mechanic builds an entire motorcycle.

Bimota mounts a typical tubular space frame around the V2 made of neatly welded steel tubes. Swing arm and rear axle mounts take over machined aluminum parts that are screwed to the steel tubes. The processing quality stands out far from mass-produced products, the eye of the beholder only finds perfect welds and milling work that radiates the highest precision.

The plastic parts also work almost perfectly. Hand-laminated, flawlessly varnished and precisely fitting, they fit into the intended recordings piece by piece and thus complete a very light-looking machine, whose styling exudes exactly that Italian charm that is needed to justify the hefty price of 20,215 euros. The pressure on the starter button ultimately drives away any frowns about the high sum. The image of an infinite number of euro bills gives way to the sound of infinitely deep two-cylinder thunder. The sitting position is stretched, sporty and the slim waist of the DB5S is impressive. The handlebars are not too deep, in contrast to the mirrors, which simply don’t show anything. Somebody had a really bad day assembling them.

Even the tachometer, which seems strangely lost in the cockpit, is not exactly well thought out. Clutch, brake, accelerator, at least it works comfortably as usual. In the city you can confidently swim with the traffic, the Bimota can be maneuvered from traffic light to traffic light without any antics. On the country road, there is finally real driving pleasure. The 1100 is a torque motor with a full blow from the speed basement and a lot of steam in the middle. With the DB5S, which weighs just under 200 kilograms, it accelerates as if pulled by a rubber band, regardless of the current speed. From around 7000 rpm, however, the V2 looks tough, almost tired it demands the next gear, which can be changed quickly thanks to the crisp gearbox.

As artfully and elaborately as the chassis is manufactured, it works in an unobtrusively sporty and direct manner. Stable in curves, not too handy, but still light-footed. Well done. Together with the perfect brakes, the Bimota is a great, but also very expensive highway robber.
