BMW F 800 GS: New standard in the middle class

  • Site online editor Gerd Stegmaier

When a BMW has the GS in its name, the alarm goes off as a bestseller. With the R80 G/S, the Munich-based company has conquered the large enduro segment since 1980. Can build on today’s F 800 GS?

The connoisseur will protest immediately: As can be seen from the "R" in the type designation, the first GS was a classic BMW 2-cylinder boxer with cardan. Its successful concept has been cultivated and further developed and lives on as the R 1200 GS.

Slimmer and lighter than its big sister

On the other hand, it only surpasses the magic 200 kilogram mark ready to drive by seven kilograms and is therefore closer to the 192 kilograms of the original GS than its successor, which now weighs 229 kilograms. The spring travel is also longer and, above all, the price of the new one is lower: With a purchase price of 10,150 euros, it undercuts the R 1200 GS by a whopping 3,000 euros. A test drive with the 25 hp weaker tradition-breaker can therefore be worthwhile.

  1. awesome motorcycle!!
Had the opportunity to drive an F800 GS really off-road for two whole days. Was first time … a bit skeptical because many only the "huge" Trust BMW machines to have off-road capabilities. My conclusion after two times 9 hours of hardcore offroad: The motorcycle is awesome! It did everything. Tumbles, falls and rollovers. Please only form an opinion after you have tested it yourself in the field!

No matter what BMW has messed up here again, there remains creative boredom for softened "I have a park in my town" endurists. I’m convinced the design team could do it differently if the stuffy board let them do it. But BMW probably wants to sell an image here that fits so wonderfully into the times of matriarchy. Ridiculous for both sexes.
