In mid-size, nothing to chew on since 2005. Roadsters at BMW since that year have been nothing but big, even badass. Between a K 1200 R armored with horses and a R 1200 R (replacing the R 1150 R) very classy and not very affordable for the novice, the roadster offer of the Munich manufacturer was not very extensive.. Something revised with the arrival of this new F 800 R, the Naked version of the F 800 S / ST tandem. A very “young” machine for the brand, with the famous Chris Pfeiffer as an ambassador (and almost creator). But stepping into one of the most turbulent (and juicy) motorcycle production markets requires being well armed ….
On a physical level, it is difficult to remain indifferent as much as it is to be ecstatic. Of course, he does not play in the Street-fighters category, but his very Germanic profile does not make you want to laugh. The headlight taken from the recent 800 GS gives it a strange look, the inspiration from the K 1300 R can be seen in the background, but what really bothers us is the abandonment of the single-sided and the belt for a classic swingarm with transmission chain. Pity.
Technical side, and apart from the preceding small apostrophe, the roadster “in the middle” of Behème is much more interesting. Engine question, the twin 800 attracts sympathy. Mechanics inaugurated on S roadways and ST (recently tested by Oli the Belgian) with a particular profile: its cylinders are inclined by 30 °, and the engine architecture offset by 360 ° allows a noise very close to the Boxer engines of the large BM range. Technologically, the engineers have worked well: lubrication by semi-dry sump, cylinder head inspired by K 1300 mills, double butterfly injection with innovative fuel flow regulation system, refined engine response, new exhaust line with repositioning of the catalyst and more curt pot, re-tiering of the gearbox with the last 3 shortened gears. With its more sporty positioning, it makes sense to plan for a tighter gearbox staging, and to make the most of the 87 horsepower of the twin cylinder..
At the level of the chassis, the R recovers the elements of the sisters. Namely a perimeter frame in aluminum where the engine plays the role of fixing the swinging arm, thanks to a reinforced casing in its rear part to anchor the swinging arm. More classic, the telescopic fork. BMW does not often take risks with its mid-displacement models – so it was almost unlikely to find a Duolever fork like on the K 1300 R. Let’s not be too intransigent…. Because the F 800 R still provides us with Brembo braking, dual 320 mm discs and 4-piston calipers, aviation hoses, beautiful sports rims and optional ABS.
This new BMW roadster also adopts THE revolution of the brand, also present on the new 2009 models (K 1300 S, R, and GT): the new turn signal control. For decades, the Bavarian controls of each turn signal were separated and implanted on each side of the handlebars. It’s finish ! BMW adopts the standard Japanese format, with a single switch on the left side. Note also that the saddle is slightly lower than on the F 800 S, and that it can still be lowered, as an option. Well, anyway, everything is optional at BM. The list that follows below gives you the possible customization and the accessories offered – vertigo of the insured wallet.
To convince more young people that this model is intended for them, the F 800 R can be kited in 34 horses. Except that at 21, you don’t necessarily have a potential of 8,000 euros to slam into a bike, even for the propeller crest. At this price, the Behème cannot compete with the Japanese in the segment; but finds itself in direct competition with the Triumph 675 Street Triple and the Ducati 696 Monster. The F 800 R will be available in alpine white / black, fiery orange or aluminum white … and maybe one day a Chris Pfeiffer Replica version, as we saw at the milan show ->
