BMW K 1600 B: The fastest excavator in the world

With a new motorcycle, BMW ventures into the segment of baggers, which is new for the Bavarians – motorcycles with thick suitcases. Can a German company score points with a US-style bike??

The fine Petersen Automotive Museum, located on posh Wilshire Boulevard in the center of Los Angeles, is one of the top addresses in the city when it comes to high-end mobility. In this respect, the environment and the occasion are a perfect match, because this is where BMW is unveiling the third new model for the coming motorcycle season. For the first time, the Bavarians are venturing into the US-style oblique two-wheel excavator segment. In these vehicles, the line falls continuously from the highest point, the window pane, to the rear. Baggers suggest relaxed driving without any sporting ambitions. And it looks as if the new BMW K 1600 B, derived from the extremely powerful K 1600 GT with six-cylinder in-line engine, will be able to meet this requirement.

Everything for aerodynamics

The silhouette with the unusually flat rear end appears stretched, almost streamlined. In order to be able to realize it, a major surgical intervention was required: the rear frame of the K 1600 GT had to be heavily modified. In this way, the seat height for the passenger was reduced by seven centimetres, creating a typical Bagger look. Still unusual to European eyes, these motorcycles include permanently installed, low-mounted panniers. BMW has also developed these from scratch and equipped them with integrated lighting units that have a signal character in two senses. The case lid has been kept flatter, but the body is deeper. The rear mudguard can be folded up to make it easier to remove the rear wheel.

The exhaust system is no less striking. The powerful rear silencers are chrome-plated and run parallel to the road. Their appearance contrasts sharply with the vehicle, which is otherwise painted completely black: because not only are all body parts black, the newly developed cast aluminum wheels with eleven spokes and the drive train are also painted black. An alternative color is not available. As with the GT, the windshield is electrically adjustable, but has been kept significantly shorter to ensure a correct Bagger line. New wind deflectors and fairing side parts that are pulled far back should nevertheless guarantee effective wind protection.

High-tech damper

Technically, the K 1600 B has been upgraded to the same level as the 2017 GT version. The Bagger variant therefore also has the semi-active chassis control system Dynamic ESA with automatic damping adjustment as well as the damping modes "Road" and "Cruise". The range of optional extras includes an electric reversing aid and a shift assistant, which enables clutch-free upshifts and downshifts. In those European markets where the ConnectedDrive system is active, there is also the intelligent emergency call for quick help in the event of accidents and emergency situations.

Technical specifications

The six-cylinder in-line engine now meets the requirements of the EU 4 standards, the maximum output is unchanged at 118 kW/160 hp with 7.750 rpm Also the maximum torque of 175 Nm at 5.250 rpm has not suffered from the reduction in emissions. There are three driving modes and dynamic traction control as standard. If you give it full power, you can reach 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, making the K 1600 B the most dynamic excavator in the world. Probably also the fastest; BMW limits itself to specifying the top speed as "over 200 km/h" as with the K 1600 GT. Including the fixed panniers, this version weighs 336 kilograms, which is 17 kilograms more than the GT without panniers. The five percent difference should hardly be noticeable, thanks to the reversing aid not even when manoeuvring.

BMW has so far remained silent on the price of the K 1600 B. The start of delivery also remains in the approximate: The second half of 2017 is given as the time of the market launch.

is always at the cutting edge of technology. It was already like that when I bought a K100 LT. … I rode this machine all over Europe. Never had any problems with it. It is still in my garage in the best condition and ready to drive. Only the prices are as breathtaking today as they were then, if you get a good mid-range car for that. The workshop prices are like a luxury car brand. But who needs 160 hp on a drive wheel?

Incredibly beautiful bike that you can cruise all over the country with. Unfortunately, the price can only be realized for a few older men, where are the bikes to be able to get young people excited about motorcycling again?

  3. What? Nice?
@Chr.K. The thing looks like the figment of ugliness in the form of improperly screwed together parts. The only thing that is nice about it is the 175 nm … reversing aid..to laugh at
