BMW K 1600 GTL 2017

If the K 1600 GT were the queen of the road, the GTL would be the Empress.
Different from its runner-up by a more relaxed driving position and the addition of a top-case, the K 1600 GTL also offers enhanced visual presence.
On its handlebars, long-distance trips will be just a formality. Straightened by a handlebars more inclined towards the rear than on the GT, the rider will benefit from a driving comfort also increased by the adoption of a lower one-piece saddle (750mm instead of the 810 / 830mm of the GT) and advanced and lowered footrests. The top-case with backrest transforms the passenger seat into a real rolling lounge while the comfort windshield will offer maximum protection against the wind while providing better aero-acoustic qualities..

We no longer present its legendary, ultra-compact in-line 6-cylinder which catapults the K 1600 GTL to the top of the Grand-Touring category. By modifying the injection mapping, the catalytic system and adding an activated carbon filter to the road, BMW succeeded in 2017 in approving it Euro4 without loss of power or torque. It will always offer us its 160hp (118kW at 7,750 rpm) and its 175 Nm (maximum at 6,500 rpm), all with the smoothness so characteristic of this engine architecture. But good !

This Euro 4 depollution was an opportunity for the K 1600 GTL to offer itself, like the K 1600 GT, some new developments for 2017.

On the design side, the road keeps its general line and its hawkish look. It inherits new sides of fairings and larger aerodynamic deflectors in order to improve the protection of the pilot. Nothing that jumps out at first glance, but there are also several small touches here and there, such as the redesigned box cover on the left side, the redesigned storage spaces and the revised silencer tips. The K 1600 GTL also exudes luxury through details absent from the K 1600 GT. Thus, the BMW logo appearing on the sides of the fairing takes the form of a chrome blade extended by a chrome strip on the cases. Discreet chrome complete the sumptuous look of the K 1600 GTL: windshield mounts and aerodynamic elements covers, handlebar weights, hubcaps on the suitcases and even cover on the top case…

Last year, the flagship and its sovereign inline six had inherited ABS Pro (adapting to the angle of the bike) as well as the Control Brake Light, which makes the brake light flash more or less. less quickly depending on the braking force. For 2017, no laser lights as on the K 1600 GTL presented at CES in Las Vegas in early 2016. This motorcycle equipped with projectors derived from the technology used on certain cars of the BMW group (series 7, i8) will remain (at least for the moment) in the state of technological demonstration.

On the other hand, the new vintage sees the arrival of semi-active ESA Dynamic suspensions, until then available as an option, and which in 2017 became standard equipment. Already known for its excellent road skills, the BMW K 1600 GTL takes comfort a step further. Always faithful to its proven chassis (perimeter aluminum frame / Duolever at the front / Paralever single-sided gimbal at the rear), the K 1600 GTL is therefore equipped with a semi-active damping system. This adjusts damping in real time based on various parameters, such as acceleration and deceleration, which are measured in real time. This makes it possible to adapt the damping force on the front and rear combinations in a few thousandths of a second..
The system offers two adjustment modes: ROAD (for optimal comfort and traction on almost any road surface) and DYNAMIC (providing firmer overall damping). Be aware that it will be possible to switch from one to the other, even while riding. Before travel, you will also have the option of adjusting the spring preload with the push of a button. Already very well off in terms of comfort, the road promises further progress in this area..

BMW K 1600 GTL 2017

Claimed by many users, a reverse gear is introduced on the K 1600 GT and GTL in 2017. Offered as an option on the GT, one would have thought that it would be part of the basic package of the GTL, but This is not the case … Here too, a few hundred euros will have to be added to benefit from it on the K 1600 GTL. Pity.
How it works? Thanks to a dedicated button on the left stalk, it will be possible to activate this reverse gear. Forward gear will then be blocked and it will then suffice to press the start button to reverse the motorcycle (propulsion via a flexible shaft). Suffice to say that it is really not luxury on a machine that weighs 348 kg (all full / 319 kg for the K 1600 GT)! But rest assured, the efficiency of the work of BMW engineers on mass balance has demonstrated its effectiveness over its predecessor. The very low center of gravity allows this XL weight to be forgotten once launched and to guarantee surprising agility on such a size..

Another newly offered option: the pro shifter (inherited from the S 1000 RR), which will allow up and down gears without intervening on the clutch. In addition to enhanced dynamism, it is certain that the left hand will appreciate this rest during long journeys..

Finally, the K 1600 GTL can also be equipped with e-Call, an intelligent call system that wishes you well. Thus ready, the Bavarian road will automatically notify the emergency services in the event of an accident and will communicate your geographic coordinates to them. Housed on the right side of the handlebars, the e-Call module consists of an SOS button protected by a cover, a microphone and a speaker. An option that we were very excited about but which unfortunately will only be available on the German market when it is launched … BMW however promises that other countries will follow soon..

In terms of standard equipment, the customer will of course be very well off. We obviously find the attributes of the K 1600 GT (ABS Pro, DTC dynamic traction control, electrically adjustable windscreen with memory function, xenon headlight, TFT screen, tire pressure sensor, grips and heated rider and passenger seat, cruise control speed, on-board computer), but this will be supplemented by a USB / MP3 / Bluetooth audio system. Of course, an opulent atmosphere, luxury and level of finish honoring the Germanic tradition will be at the rendezvous.

In conclusion, the K 1600 GTL is improving to remain the standard-bearer of German Grand-Tourism. More comfortable, more luxurious, but also heavier than the K 1600 GT (which is more dynamic), the K 1600 GTL is offered at a price of € 24,800, i.e. € 2,250 more than the K 1600 GT.
With this elitist price, we regret that certain equipment such as reverse gear or adaptive directional lighting is not offered as standard on this machine which is placed at the very top of the BMW range..

The new K 1600 GTL 2017 is available in three colors: Light white (white and gray), Thunder gray metallic (Two shades of gray) and Ebony metallic / Black storm metallic. This last color, reserved for the K 1600 GTL Elegance, will be completed by additional chrome accents on the front mudguard and the aerodynamic deflectors..
