BMW turns 100. At the closing event in Santa Monica, the Bavarian group impressively presented itself with a motorcycle of the future. We were there at the world premiere of the crazy electric bike.

BMW has been celebrating since spring. Not opulent and exuberant, as other companies would do, but always within reason. Stylish, without much fanfare and any airs and graces. Each of the corporate branches gifted the core brand with a vision for the next 100 years.

Electric Superbike

After BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce, it was the motorcycle division’s turn at the final event in California. In the early 1920s, she drove the BMW R32 even before the automobiles on the international stage. The world tour has now come to an unofficial conclusion. After the core BMW brand had presented its automotive vision of the Vision Next 100 at the kick-off event in Munich, the future models of Mini and Rolls-Royce were unveiled in London before a trip to Beijing and a staff party in the Munich Olympic Stadium.

Like all other brand models, the more than spectacular motorcycle study also bears the title Vision Next 100. The day before yesterday and the day after tomorrow meet more in the dark future model than in the three car models. Characteristic features such as the black triangular frame or the silhouette of the boxer engine can be seen despite the reduced design. The bike looks like a movie prop from the "matrix"-stripes.

"The BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100 embodies the BMW Group’s understanding of motorcycling in a networked world: it is an analogue experience in a digital age," says Edgar Heinrich, Chief Designer at BMW Motorrad, "it lets me break out of everyday life. From the moment I ascend, I experience absolute freedom. – ‘The Great Escape’."

A flexible frame stretches from the front to the rear wheel of the two-wheeler. The flexibility should enable steering maneuvers without the joints that are common today. When the handlebars are moved, the frame deforms, making it easy to change direction. The forces required for this vary depending on the driving situation.

Electric drive meets boxer design

The drive sits in the middle of the black frame as a stylistic element and historical reminiscence. In terms of shape and design, it is reminiscent of the traditional boxer engine, however, houses a zero-emission power unit. The outer shape of the electric boxer changes depending on the driving situation. At rest it fits snugly. As soon as the journey begins, the engine block moves out to the side. In this way, he optimizes the aerodynamics and weather protection of the motorcycle while riding. Body parts such as the seat, the upper frame cover and the fenders are made of carbon.

The highlight: the motorcycle of the future can no longer fall over. Active assistance systems automatically balance the motorcycle while driving and when stationary. The systems can give the motorcycle more stability in certain driving situations and the driver safety.

The motorcycle that no longer falls over

The driver is completely protected by assistance systems and can therefore do without a helmet or protective clothing. The most important information is projected onto the lens of goggles or the imaginary tank. Warning messages are processed in the interactive engine clothing. Incidentally, the BMW world tour is not quite over with the final event in Santa Monica. All four visions are to return to their Bavarian homeland in the next few weeks, so that they can then be admired at BMW Welt.

  1. dumbing down
Degeneration and even more dependency will bring us in the near future. We will thanks … intelligent control soon forgot why a vehicle with two wheels cannot stand still. But maybe our grandchildren can still understand the reason for this "google", as long as the algorithms allow it. and you

  2. And what about the sound?
And what about the vibrations? It then rides like a bicycle in the fitness center. It may be an interesting experience to drive something like this, but the best food doesn’t taste good without spices. The spice is the sound and the feeling of the power of the engine. This bike will certainly also be fast, but whirr through the country like on an e-bike. You can also take the ICE there. Seems like soup without the salt.

  3. Bravo BMW
This is what the future looks like. Design meets intelligence. Smart mobility. Golden times are coming for motorcycle fans. This NEXT VISION 100 e-motorcycle can do everything that motorbikes 1.0 can not. What would really interest me: what do the assistance systems look like that are supposed to make it possible to ride without a helmet and motorcycle clothing?
