A BMW roadster that would endure a comparison against a Triumph Speed Triple or a Kawasaki Z 1000 or a Ducati monster … improper?!? Not so sure. Without coming close to such strong identities, BM is trying to reach a new clientele with its R 1150 R roadster by transforming it into a machine with a more villainous look.. Fun colors bordering on manga, profusely black paint on the parts of the chassis, globular double optics … it’s shocking but it’s nice. In order to make the bike even more agile, the big BM roadster has exchanged its front axle for that of the sporty R 1100 S, now controlled by a wide Supermotard style handlebar..
Once in the saddle, even if you are still riding a BM, the driving position is very quickly similar to the Supermotard, especially as the machine is surprisingly agile. Without fighting to achieve a frenzied pace, the driver can play it serenely while rolling with efficiency and devilishness, the chassis-part-cycle equation being a balancing act. We still appreciate the flexibility and good health of the flat-twin, but the pace accelerates quickly to the rogue driving, we come to ask for a little more reach and horsepower. The Rockster is a scoundrel who has kept most of the qualities of the BM roadster – unless it’s the other way around !
