The kit from Franzis Verlag, officially licensed by BMW, comprises around 200 parts and can be assembled into a fully functional boxer engine in three to four hours. All parts are plugged or screwed – nothing has to be glued. The kit also includes a two-part booklet with 120 large-format pages, which, in addition to detailed assembly instructions, also provides background information on BMW motorcycle history, the boxer engine and the BMW R 90 S..

The BMW R 90 S is a motorcycle icon of the 1970s. When it came onto the market in 1973, it was one of the fastest production motorcycles of its time and the top model in the “Stroke Six” series. One of the special features was the first five-speed gearbox installed by BMW. The two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine had a displacement of 898 cc and delivered 67 hp.

Transparent and flexible

The transparent functional model has many moving parts: The crankshaft, cylinder and piston work in a realistic interplay, just like in the larger model. The ignition sparks in the cylinders are simulated by LEDs. The switchable five-speed gearbox can also be observed from the outside. A sound module integrated in the motor pedestal lets the boxer come alive acoustically at the push of a button.

When assembled, the 1: 2 scale model has a width of 160 mm, a height of 355 mm and a depth of 465 mm. Three 1.5 V AA batteries are required for this function. The BMW boxer engine is available for 199 euros.
