BMW 500 R5 1936

Menus

This motorcycle was produced from 1936 to 1937 in 2,652 copies. Thanks to the engineer Rudolf Schleicher, it is equipped with a tunnel box engine (without horizontal parting line), a gearbox operated by a foot lever (doubled by a hand selector) and a fork hydraulic adjustable. The “flat-twin” has a tumbled distribution, two camshafts and two valves per cylinder. With a square section (bore equal to the stroke), i.e. 68 x 68mm, this 494 cm3 cube engine. Two AMAL carburetors are used to water the beast. The valve return springs are of the “pin” type..

All this together gives it a power of 24 hp at 5500 rpm for a consumption of about 3 liters per hundred. The final transmission is provided by a cardan shaft. Weighing 165 kgs, it will be able to reach 140 km / h.

Having no rear suspensions, only the saddle will cushion the bumps in the road a little. It should be noted that, since 1929/30, the German firm equipped its two wheels with stamped sheet metal frames. This R5 will be equipped with a tubular frame and will mark the beginning of the end of stamped sheet metal frames (even if the latter will still be manufactured for a few years).

This motorcycle was sold in the 1,500 Reichsmarks, which is the equivalent of 10,300 euros today. In 1936 a German worker was earning around 21 Reichsmarks per week.
