Being the smallest BMW doesn’t stop you from having great ideas. Or rather, desires of great regions. The G 650 GS, like many people, watched the stages of the Dakar in South America. She began to dream, searched the BM garage for parts, and around the posters of great escapes, she saw a limitless landscape and a name: Sertão.
Do not look for any place on a map. The Sertão is a region of Brazil with a semi-arid climate. A corner that smacks of adventure over a million km2. To put the wheels there, there is no question for the G 650 GS to go out in its street clothes. She takes a look at the parts inventory and equips herself with more adequate gear. Its suspensions are raised by 40mm and 45mm respectively to provide 210mm of travel. The wheels are also preparing for more off-road use: they are no longer with sticks but with spokes, the front one becomes a 21 inch, and the profile of the tires evolves towards more finesse – 90 and 130 instead of the torque 110 and 140. With more ground clearance and the transplant of an engine spoiler, the GS Sertão develops much more crossing capacity. A slightly longer wheelbase will improve stability. Comfort will be improved thanks to the higher screen and a set of hand guards.
The G 650 GS Sertão trusts its 652 cm3 single-cylinder to support the road, escapades and small paths. Formerly, a trail could only be conceived with a mono; today, they eat twin and galore. Thus, the G 650 has become an original in the category. It’s hardly the Yamaha XT 660s that use the same architecture. The block comes out 48 horses; appreciable power in the city, sufficient in soft ground, rather fair on the highway. But the G 650 GS, of old design, has other advantages: a natural ease, a measured consumption, a spirit of adventure, and a price … oh no, there, we think twice.
