With this new model, the sport designation has just taken on a new dimension at BMW. A sportswoman like never seen in Munich, with technical solutions borrowed directly from competition, and equipped as is not allowed. here is HP2 Sport, third model of the family after the HP2 Enduro and the HP2 Megamoto.
The followers, fans or spectators of Endurance races already know this bike. Indeed, it has already had its baptism of fire and its proofs in races this year, such as the 24 hours of Le Mans, the tests of Barcelona, Oschersleben and recently the Bol d’Or. So, some observers were anticipating the release of this bike – but nobody thought that BM would go so far in the design of this machine for the series; because between the endurance proto and the production version, there are really … few differences:
The flat twin now reaches 9,500 rpm and spits out 130 horsepower. To achieve these higher revs, the twin cylinder heads have been thoroughly revised and subjected to even more extensive testing. Two overhead camshafts driven by chain and valves actuated by ultra-light pawls now allow the engine to run at a maximum speed of 700 rpm higher than that of the R 1200 S. The four valves in radial arrangement ensure very compact combustion chambers, so that it was possible to dispense with the second spark plug used so far on the R models. The compression ratio is 12.5 to 1. BM recommends SP 98 as fuel but the engine accepts 95. The horizontal arrangement of the camshafts implies two peculiarities: each shaft controls an intake valve and an exhaust valve and the cams are conical. To increase the gas flow, the valve head diameter has been increased from 36 millimeters on the intake side and from 31 millimeters on the exhaust side. The intake ducts have been optimized by machining. The pawl control technique uses shims placed on the valves, as on the K 1200 engines..
An essential tool for competition, the shifter is making its first appearance in series on a machine. BM is ahead of the Japanese and the Italians on their own ground (adaptation of racing solutions for the series). This system allows gears to be mounted very quickly without cutting the throttle or disengaging the clutch. If the pilot activates the selector, the electronic engine management acts on the ignition angle and couples the injection. The kinematic chain therefore switches to “reduced load” for the gear change which can then be carried out very quickly without actuating the clutch. The shifter works both according to the normal gearshift grid and, on request, according to the reverse grid for the stroke (pressure sensor in the range of accessories). On the other hand, if the pilot actuates the clutch, the system does not come into action. Whatever the situation, the bike leaves the rider to decide whether to use the shifter or not. |
The braking system of the new BMW HP2 Sport uses Brembo monobloc calipers (as on the Ducati 1098) four-piston radially mounted, biting 320mm diameter discs. Radial screwing is carried out by means of a new cast iron lug located on the lower part of the Telelever. The rear wheel is calmed by a double piston floating caliper. Sport requires, the brake hoses are aviation type. As an option, BMW offers an ABS suitable for sports use. The system has been optimized in terms of its rear wheel anti-take-off function. An additional pressure sensor integrated into the front brake circuit allows finer regulation of the system and prevents the electronic unit from opening the front brake too early when the rear wheel is heavily unloaded. However, the pilot has the option of disconnecting the ABS when going on the circuit.. |
The instrument cluster fitted as standard to the cockpit of the BMW HP2 Sport is a gem of technology, developed in cooperation with the company 2D Systems (whose systems are also implemented for the capture and analysis of data in GP). The handset has a large digital display and different operating modes. It is controlled using two switches on the left stalk. The upper triple clamp as well as the two flanged handlebars-bracelets, adjustable on the vertical axis, are refined forgings in solid-milled aluminum. At this level, we also find the brake master cylinder as well as the radial piston clutch master cylinder, which are fixed using quick-release clamps, like what we find in the race. |

When it comes to efficiency, the HP2 Sport comes out on top. The Telelever and Paralever suspension systems are complemented by a set Ohlins adjustable in all directions. The rear shock absorber also makes it possible to adjust the attitude of the motorcycle. A revised gearbox staging, tighter, allows to keep all the gniak of the engine in the intermediate reports. The shape of the nostrils typical of Bavarian productions has been enlarged and optimized in the wind tunnel to better cool the 2 oil radiators located behind. The air channeling and optimal heat dissipation have been particularly studied.
The hunt for weight has been done everywhere. But true to its philosophy of respect for the environment, the brand has taken care to install a three-way catalytic converter, even if it costs a few kilos. Everything around it is designed for racing: an exhaust valve is there to strengthen the torque curve. On leaving the cylinder heads, the exhaust line now passes under the engine to improve the angle grip. The pot, very design, is supposed to deliver an impressive sonorous roar typical of the Boxer. To see … but if there is an option of the same pot as the one used in Endurance, it will be a choice to make absolutely: at the Bol d’Or, the proto gave off the same boom as that of an airplane engine of the second world war. Could the HP2 Sport be BMW’s answer to competition? No not yet. This bike was not designed to compete with a GSX-R or an R1 for track or race performance. It is about offering enthusiasts the ultimate evolution of Boxer sportiness for the track. Something exclusive, with a very pronounced racing taste … the culmination of a challenge that BMW had launched. But at MP, we recently thought that an HP4 version, with all these technical solutions and a powerful and light 4-cylinder (BM, an engine manufacturer in F1, can do it) would be a formidable weapon against the Japanese armada. We just messed up the name – BMW’s new ultimate sport identity is called S 1000 RR.
