It started with a sports car comparable to the CBR 1100 XX (excuse the little); it continued with the most powerful roadster in the world with a surprising face; this is confirmed by this new big GT: the new generation K 1200 base with its 4 cylinders facing the road and its unique chassis spurs a real revolution at BMW. After the S and the R, here is the K 1200 GT. A machine dedicated to tourism that benefits from the latest BMW technology. The famous chassis with its Duolever front axle (no longer telescopic fork), the new Paralever, the suspension system adjustable from the ESA handlebars (optional), and its large motor full of watts. In this GT definition, the unit is reduced to a power of 152 hp; a reduction in favor of more torque and the availability of the mill: power and maximum torque are obtained respectively 750 and 500 rpm earlier. Faced with the first K 1200 GT, the 2006 version develops 17% more power and turns out to be 11% more torquey, with 3/4 of the maximum torque available from 3000 rpm. Incidentally, we are dealing with the most powerful grand touring machine on the market. This is because the K 1200 GT must take luggage and offer more protection than the S. Hence its new fairing, more massive and noticeably less harmonious than the old K GT it replaces. The mechanical basis and chassis are the same as the K series – it is the fairing panels, the optical unit, the integrated indicators and the screen that change. Frankly, we seem to gain in protection but in terms of design, since the Honda 800 Pacific Coast, we have rarely done so close to the fridge..
Between 2 generations, the K 1200 GT has gained in autonomy (+ 17%), in lightness, and in payload (capacity improved by 19%). The standard equipment of the K 1200 perfectly meets a GT expectation: adjustable saddle and handlebars, electric screen, case system, brake pad wear indicator and partially integral ABS are standard. Then it’s up to you to indulge yourself and enhance the K 1200 GT. As BM would say: “BMW Motorrad also has a range of tailor-made options and accessories available to customers.” Among these, let us quote some elements welcome to make a motorcycle with the small onions: heated saddle and grips, high screen, electronic adjustment of ESA suspension, System of control of the inflation pressure (RDC, planned as of the autumn 2006) , cruise control … and if that is not enough for you, here is the complete list of options and accessories with their specificities (click here).
A look :
The main technical differences distinguishing the new K1200GT from its predecessor:
- Maximum power increased (+ 17%)
- Maximum torque increased (+ 11%)
- Reduced empty weight (–6%)
- Increased payload (+ 19%)
- Increased tank capacity (+ 17%)
- Increased theoretical autonomy (+ 17%)
