Superb evolution of the R 1100 R, the BMW roadster gets a makeover at the same time as it adopts the new boxer engine inflated to 1130 cm3. Worthy of the brand’s propeller cars, this large roadster is of rare elegance, a mixture of classicism and bourgeoisie.. The dressing is certainly more aggressive but still as noble. Only the front fender looks strange. Its tortured shapes contrast with the beautiful balance of the line. Dynamically, its particular profile channels air to the side oil coolers, and only the dashboard remains unchanged – so much the better, it’s a real gem. By becoming 1150, the R also gains the new 6-speed gearbox, new EVO braking, torque and power. We find the part-cycle elements dear to BM, namely the Paralever and the Telelever, here more refined and more elegant. It also took the opportunity to acquire the wheels of its sporty cousin R 1100 S. EVO braking consists of new larger 15 mm brake discs and lighter Tokico calipers. Above all, the R 1150 R can be fitted with a new so-called “intelligent” Integral ABS, which is very efficient but whose operation confuses the uninitiated. Where we will enjoy more is by using the new box. Already featured on the R 1150 GS and 1100 S models, its handling and smoothness are exemplary.
Supple, silent and velvety, the twin has gained watts but still distills them without any mood swings. The liveliness of the tachometer is in no way comparable to that of an Italian, more rounded in its flights and just as willing to win the red zone. The mill expresses itself with joy in the mid-range, with all the majesty of a high-ranking machine. With its cardan shaft and dry clutch, driving a BM takes time to get used to it. When driving, the machine proudly displays its claims: remarkable agility for a machine of this size and undeniable efficiency. The chassis emphasizes stability, gives confidence and improves comfort compared to the 1100.
In Munich, we like to create renowned machines. This big roadster is proud, elegant, serious without forgetting to be able to offer a cheerful driving … In motorbike as in car, a BM remains a BM.
