4 years of success, of domination, and it’s already time to hand over the baton … to a new generation? No, to an evolution. Improving the R 1200 GS was a nice challenge from BM engineers – and they really wanted to raise the level of claims of the road trail benchmark..
With 5% more power, the 1200 climbs to 105 horsepower. Optimizing and strengthening motorcycle performance was one of the major development axes for the GS. The increase in power is combined with a revised gearbox and more engine speed to give the machine extra punch..
Even if it means tampering with the box, you might as well take the opportunity to review the passage of gears. This is how the control has been improved by an optimized effect / stroke ratio..
Under its newly tickled look (lightly retouched optical unit, new special steel shoulders), the chassis claims few changes, but the importance outweighs the quantity. BMW innovates by offering for the first time on a trail an electronically controlled suspension. This system is none other than the one that appeared on the K 1200 S, the ultra-fast sport-GT of the range. It is obviously suitable for trail use, and is called ESA Enduro. Until now, the ESA implemented on the K 1200 S made it possible to intervene on the calibration of the shock absorber of the Telelever and the Paralever, as well as on the adjustment of the spring preload at the rear – the ESA Enduro also offers electro-hydraulic adjustment of the front spring preload. It’s still cool to be able to adapt the suspension to the terrain just by selecting a mode with a button. But do not dream, the system is an option – not tomorrow that we will see in series…
The ESA on the BMW R 1200 GS allows this:
Road modes: by pressing the button, the driver can choose between three loading states – “alone”, “alone with luggage” or “in pairs” – identified by corresponding symbols on the information display, this choice then being made in the setting of the preload of the rear spring. Then, each of the three loading states can be associated with three different damping laws – “Sport”, “Normal” and “Comfort”. Regardless of the road mode selected, the preload of the front spring,
on the Telelever, is in the “Minimum” position.
Off-road modes: to move in the field, the ESA Enduro system offers two settings for the springs, each of which can be combined with the three different damping laws. The “medium reserve” preload law, identified on the display by the “round hills” symbol, increases the preload of the front spring to 50%, the rear combination being set to the same value. This calibration is suitable for off-road outings at low and high speed, on terrain supposed to be free of setbacks, holes and other significant roughness. The “maximum reserve” mode, marked by the symbol “sharp hills”, changes the spring preload to 100% on the instrument panel both front and rear and is suitable for situations in which the resistance to bottoming must be maximum. This calibration also increases the ground clearance by 2 centimeters compared to road modes.
The two settings described for the spring preload can be combined with the three damping laws “Soft”, “Norm” and “Hard”.
While “Soft” is the right choice, for example in low-speed trialising passages, “Norm” is the calibration suitable for most off-road rides. The “Hard” law is suitable for very smooth slopes on the flat, but also for deep sand..
BM is taking advantage of this upgrade to improve 2-3 small things. A new handlebar (that of the HP2) adjustable in 2 positions, a fuel gauge with a new sensor for more precision, a more powerful alternator, and further expand its list of options. The competition was already drooling copiously to align with the level of the GS. They are quits to start whipping again. The 1200 GS, it proudly continues its long stretches.
The main features of the new BMW R 1200 GS:
• Even more dynamic engine showing more responsiveness in the upper rev range.
• Engine power increased by 5%.
• Maximum speed increased to 8,000 rpm and wider useful speed range.
• Gear ratios and secondary reduction ratio modified to gain significantly in punch and acceleration.
• Redesigned six-speed transmission with larger diameter bearings and optimized drive kinematics for even more precise shifting.
• Electronic suspension calibration via the optional ESA Enduro system, the first application of a system of this type on a trail. Further increase in agility, aptitude for grand tourism
and off-road thanks to individual spring / damper adjustments.
• Electro-hydraulic spring preload adjustment on the front and rear combination as an integral part of the ESA Enduro system.
