There is finally right! Since the time that BMW introduced its new Boxer in the various models of its range, the R 1150 R roadster was beginning to grow impatient at not being able to enjoy the performance of the 1170 cm3 as well. Patience is finally rewarded: with this new mill, the bourgeois roadster from Munich will be able to claim a new presence on its coat of arms.. Attention naked, here is the new R 1200 R.
The BM R series roadster is THE classy and bourgeois roadster, a beautiful race machine designed to go with delight from the golf club to Roland Garros. Not really the kind of gear to get involved in a street brawl with wanton street fighters. With the 1200 R, that may change. Because by moving to a new generation, the bike gains a sacred dose of anabolics. From 85 hp, the boiler now spits 109 nags – 24 more horsepower, that’s a hell of a push forward; and this allows the R 1200 R to compete directly with the Ducati S4R. More power, and also more torque (it climbs from 9.8 to 11.5 mkg) combine with a vertiginous loss of weight (- 20 kgs). The color is announced: the R feeds very serious new ambitions.
However, it is not the wisdom of the design that would have enlightened us on its new services. The R remains the elegant roadster that characterizes it. However, this new opus seems less inspired, less gentrified than the 1150. Certain intrinsic elements have even unfortunately disappeared. What a pity that the superb chrome dashboard loses its place in favor of a black plastic case of the latest generation of BM instrumentation. The front fender returns to the standard type, the two small oil radiators located on the side are replaced by a single element housed in front of the engine, and the pretty split Telelever regains its design from the early days. A careful eye will have noted the graft of a steering damper under the left arm of the Telelever. The direction of the R 1200 R must be particularly lively if this appendix is invited on this roadster.
We also discover a new exhaust, a rear end inspired by that of the K 1200 R, the latest version of the Paralever swingarm, superb new rims, and depending on the angle of view, we will even find a bit of resemblance to it. the Moto-Guzzi Breva. Astonishing, no !?!
The dress is fine, the name is noble; and under the presence, it is the technological festival. The R 1200 R heralds a new offensive of silicone chips and other engineer’s bubbling: new generation of full ABS, ASC anti-slip system, RDC tire pressure control, ESA electronic suspension adjustment, on-board electronics digital CAN bus network … Real equipment for a Series 7 sedan. That we can draw from the generous and expensive list of options of the Bavarian manufacturer. BM still makes an effort on the saddle, offering you the choice of saddle height free of charge. Then, between the electronic crutches, the windshield, the heated grips, the suitcases, the GPS, the cylinder head covers, and all the rest, we are no longer very far from the Redoute catalog..
For a roadster of such character, we can only be pleasantly surprised to discover so many mechanical promises, rather reserved for more nasty machines. The R 1200 R wants to prove that you can be sporty in a baron’s suit.
