Derived from the standard XB-12 S, the SS benefits from developments made on the new Ulysses, all with the aim of offering more room on board, and a little less radical behavior. The lengthened frame, the new swingarm, the more open column angle (it goes from 21 to 22 °) and the increase in caster from 84 to 119 mm, all this has multiple consequences: first, a rise wheelbase and space to fit on this tiny machine. Then, a dose of additional autonomy – the frame acting as a tank, the lengthening of its spars increase the fuel capacity: + 2.2 L. Finally, a less virulent behavior for this street-fighter, which should however remain very lively and playful. We also note the appearance of a new gearbox and a more resistant transmission belt. Now you have the choice between the mini Buell and the micro Buell.
Trial :
One beside the other, hold on to recognize the S from the SS … unless you have a laser rangefinder handy. Damned, which one is the big one? You just have to step over one to find out. Once in the saddle, the differences are obvious (facwe talk). It is above all life on board that is changed, improved, friendly. The new saddle is much more comfortable and even allows to take a passenger, something almost impossible with the XB-12 S. The engine has not changed and remains the good big factory with heavy and bulky watts – but with the SS and its greater autonomy, you can enjoy it for longer.
With its revamped geometry, the XB-12 SS is no longer a boisterous, over-vivacious kid. Engaging in a curve shows a certain laziness of the front axle. It becomes necessary to insist, to impose the desired trajectory on it. Once engaged, the Buell releases its new card: more stability. The 12 SS is less nervous, more reassuring, more accommodating, in short, less hothead.
By adding an S, the XB-12 goes from the status of a smart pocket bike to that of a wisely shameless compact machine. A good way to discover the Buell universe without losing your Latin.
