A full range of electric KTMs including a scooter by 2025
KTM, for the moment the only big manufacturer with BMW to offer standard electric two-wheelers, plans to seriously expand its battery-powered range by 2025 with in particular a new scooter. The Austrian manufacturer has revealed its plans at the same time as its new Freeride E-XC 2018. Explanations.
“We know that e-mobility will change the mobility landscape in the future, and our vision is very clear,” says Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM. "For the future, in 2025, we plan to have a greater range of models available with particular attention to the displacement sector".

The statement of the boss of the Austrian brand clearly targets the C Evolution electric scooter from its rival BMW (best selling electric two-wheeler in France), which KTM wishes to compete in the short term thanks to "a complete range of machines, including one e -scooter ", she explains.
The manufacturer has also started a partnership this summer with the manufacturer of electric bicycles – a German company which belongs to the Puello family – also with the aim of "producing Crossover products in the bicycle sector as well as using our expertise. in electric mobility in other applications ".
Motorcycle, scooter, bicycle: Katoche puts the watts on the electric two-wheeler
KTM will therefore within eight years expand its range of electric two-wheelers with motorcycles, a new scooter and potentially also bicycles. This last orientation is relevant insofar as demand is exploding for VAE (electrically assisted bicycles): in France, approximately 134,000 sold in 2016 against 102,000 in 2015 and … 6,700 in 2006. That is to say a total multiplied by 20 in ten years !
And despite the recent and contested decision to remove the premium (up to € 200) for the purchase of an electric bike in France from February 2018, the forecasts remain optimistic: the cap of 200,000 "battery-powered" bikes could be reached next year in France! This strong growth can be seen across Europe, particularly in Germany and Belgium..
In the meantime, KTM is continuing its efforts in its first sector of activity: motorcycles. More exactly the off-road motorcycle, with which the Orange brand began to use electric propulsion in 2011. Marketed, its Freeride-E range for 2018 features many improvements unveiled on the new Freeride E-XC, a type motorcycle. "trail" approved on the road.
KTM Freeride E-XC 2018: more juice (orange) !
Its new magnet motor can deliver 18 kWh peak (+ 2 kWh), or up to 24.5 hp. However, its nominal power of 9 kW (12 hp) allows it to be accessible to A1 (125cc) licenses from 16 years old, despite its impressive 42 Nm of torque. Suffice to say that she watts this new E-XC !
The integration of liquid cooling optimizes the operation of its engine and its control unit. In addition, the 3.9 kWh lithium-ion battery would provide "50%" more autonomy than the previous 2.6 kWh, i.e. up to 1.5 hours of use depending on the driving style and the mode chosen (Economy , Enduro and Cross).
What about charging time? It would be understood – as in 2017 – between "50 minutes" (80% load) and "80 minutes" (100%). In other words, in the best case, the KTM electric motorcycle can run an hour and a half before spending almost the same duration (80 min = 1h20!) Plugged into a 220V socket to return to the initial level. !
In anticipation of longer rides, the solution is to keep a second charged battery within reach of gloves and to replace it with the help of tools: the battery, easily accessible by lifting the saddle, is fixed by four nuts. It remains to plan the route accordingly !
Green leisure activities boosted by electricity ?
The perimeter frame of this 2018 E-XC still mixes steel and aluminum while the damping is entrusted to the house brand, WP. Braking is provided by a 4-piston radial caliper from Formula, which clamps a single 260 mm front disc (230 mm at the rear).
The advertised weight is 111 kg all "loads done" (!) For this high saddle motorcycle (910 mm!) And equipped with a generous ground clearance (340 mm). Like the previous generation, the Freeride E-XC also uses a braking energy recovery system.
Its price is not communicated, but it will probably be between 11,000 and 12,000 € (11,525 € in 2017). It is also on this dissuasive pricing aspect that KTM and its competitors must imperatively progress, even if their low cost of use and their limited maintenance then plead in their favor: Katoche thus estimates the "full" of its novelty at only "0". , 80 € " !
Without forgetting also, in the case of this E-XC, the satisfaction of circulating silently in nature without emitting polluting emissions there – at least while driving. At a time when more and more access to the roads are closed to thermal engine vehicles (often under pressure from environmental groups), this is a fact that should not be overlooked: by 2025, perhaps even that Stefan Pierrer will only be able to sell electric off-road two-wheelers !
