Business - A lively start to 2014 for motorcycles in France - 2014 is off to a good start

The International Automobile and Motorcycle Union Chamber (CSIAM) brought together the main players in motorized 2 and 3-wheelers to comment on the start of 2014, marked by a market recovery of + 10.1%… and by an advertising campaign !

2014 is off to a great start

Never, since the establishment of the four-monthly meetings of the International Chamber of Automotive and Motorcycle Trade Unions (read), its deputy chairman had started his conference with so much good news !

On a global level first of all, Thierry Archambault indicates that "at the end of April 2014, the two- and three-wheeler motor market was up 10.1% compared to the same period in 2013, with a total of 61,333 registrations".

Encouraging, this progression is established in comparison with the beginning of 2013 "marked by very unfavorable weather which had weighed for 5 to 10 points in the drop recorded then", estimates the CSIAM. This year, the sun was back. But who will complain? ?!

Likewise, as recalls Jean-Claude Hogrel, president of the two-wheeler branch of the National Council of Automobile Professionals (CNPA), "volumes remain far from those reached five years ago … but any increase is good to take !"

Admittedly, sales of mopeds are down -7.15% (26,267 units). But if sales of 50 cc scooters slipped by -8.9%, those of box cyclos increased at the same time by nearly + 3%. Yes môssieur, there are still kids in France who love motorbikes !

The finding is even better for the 125s, since sales of this displacement are up + 2.9%. "It is certainly a first in three years", remarks Mr. Archambault:"125 scooter sales increased … by + 1%, but they increased all the same !"

The increase in sales of 125 motorcycles is more marked (+ 3%), thanks "the arrival of successful models like Honda’s MSX or KTM’s Duke which is holding up well (with ABS as standard, Editor’s note) ", recognizes Eric de Seynes, president of CSIAM … and general manager of operations at Yamaha Motor Europe.

For large engines, the situation is satisfactory since the number of registrations between January 1 and April 30, 2014 in France reached 36,293 units, a very clear increase of + 12.3% compared to 2013.

In the family of maxiscooters, however, the trends are contrasted "with a sharp decline in the micro market from 125 to 250 (-54%), a strong increase from 250 to 500 (+ 57%) and a decline in the market from 500 to 750 cc (-16%)", details the CSIAM.

"The three-wheeled motor vehicles segment is driving the market up with a fine increase of + 31.8%", adds the union chamber. Several novelties explain this nice score:, Gilera Fuoco and .

As for motorcycles – the real ones! -, the segment of 250 to 500 cc jumped by + 40% and that of more than 750 cc climbed by more than 20%. Only the sales of machines from 500 to 750 cc slipped by -9%, which does not worry professionals at all..
