Rain suit before the end?
The waterproof leather suit is coming. MOTORRAD has already been able to test the Gore-Tex prototype in practice.

One for all or in English: one leather, all weather. With this full-bodied statement, the climate expert Gore-Tex wants to stir up the leather scene in the future. With a waterproof leather laminate, the rain suit should hit the collar.
MOTORRAD was able to thoroughly test the new material with a not commercially available Gore test suit during driving tests on the race track in Calafat / Spain. The first impressions are convincing: water rolls off the completely perforated outer skin without any problems, and even at moderate temperatures of around ten degrees Celsius there are no signs of cooling. Even with a sporty, forced pace, a comfortable feeling remains. If you had done the same thing with a conventional racing suit and a raincoat on, you would have broken a sweat. This means that the leather laminate, which seven companies (see box on the right) will initially use for their clothing, will also be of interest to motorcycle racing. BMW sports director Berti Hauser announced during the driving tests that the endurance teams would be equipped with the new Gore leather.

In order to make the leather waterproof and breathable at the same time, the tried and tested Gore-Tex climate membrane is glued between the leather and the lining.
For sporty use, the laminate is also available with perforated leather.
The first MOTORRAD practical test with a prototype from Gore-Tex was very promising.
Seven manufacturers will offer the new leather laminate. Prices start at around 1000 euros.
BMW Motorsport plans to equip endurance teams with Gore leather suits.
Buyable
Seven brands want to process the new leather laminate from Gore. The most expensive front runner so far is Rukka with the Lancelot combination (jacket 1200, trousers 999 euros). The offer from Hein Gericke, on the other hand, is much cheaper. However, the new leather laminate in the PSX combination (jacket 599.95 euros, trousers 449.95 euros) is only used in the fall zones, otherwise the two-piece consists of a waterproof textile laminate from Gore-Tex. Dainese gained experience with a forerunner of the Gore leather laminate back in 2002. However, when a new model will come is still open. In addition, there is still a lot of smoke in the development departments of Alpinestars, Ixs, Kushitani and Stadler. Much is likely to be presented at the Intermot trade fair in Cologne in autumn 2008.

With the current pricing, the simple rain suit for 12.95 euros is not really at risk from the new Gore leather laminate?
Nice. Because we are actually aiming at the rain suit. Of course, there will still be the motorcyclist who is okay with stopping in the rain and pulling on the PVC suit. On the other hand, it is of course extremely convenient not to have to stop in the future to put on or take off the rain suit depending on the weather.
Hydrophobic, i.e. water-repellent leather is actually old hat. What is really revolutionary about Gore leather??
Even hydrophobic leather lets water through. It takes longer, but the leather soaks up when it rains, and at some point you’re wet. This does not happen with Gore-Tex Pro-Shell leather. We have also raised the breathability of the leather to the level of textiles. And that’s sensational. For us it is important that we protect motorcyclists as best as possible. And when it comes to safety, leather is number one for us too.
Gore-Tex generally stands for touring clothing. When will the first racing suit with Gore-Tex be available??
Basically, most companies will use the Gore-Tex Pro-Shell leather laminate for touring suits. The production of racing suits is very complex with many sealed seams, the number of pieces would be negligible here. However, it makes perfect sense to use the technology in the World Endurance Championship. In a 24-hour race you drive through all the capricious weather conditions in the world. With the Gore-Tex leather suit, the driver stays dry and can also benefit from the breathability ?? which increases the efficiency. With the rubber pelts that racing drivers pull over when it rains, you sweat yourself to death.
