Melanie in the Dainese leather suit.

While searching for her personal protective equipment, Melanie fell into a real shopping frenzy: “It has always been my dream to wear a wickedly expensive, cool looking leather suit.” And with a wink, the 28-year-old editor adds: “It’s like with underwear – sometimes you don’t want what is practical and suitable for everyday use…” So it was fast Dainese the black and white two-piece called Dominia in a bag, with matching boots, gloves, back protector and a functional underwear set – all in a women’s cut. However, looking at the weather during the driving school and test drives allowed Melanie a little pragmatism, which is why she decided to take on the wet and cold season of the year IXS covered with an all-weather textile set.

Complete IXS equipment (with helmet) – total: 1427 euros

  • IXS Sabina: Women’s textile jacket made of Cordura with Gore-Tex climate membrane, removable thermal lining (can be used as a separate jacket), shoulder and elbow protectors (back can be retrofitted). 369.90 euros at IXS
  • IXS Checker II: textile trousers made of Cordura with Gore-Tex climate membrane, removable thermal lining, knee protectors (hips can be retrofitted) and anti-slip trimmings on the leg ends and seat. 299.90 euros at IXS
  • IXS HX 406 Mystic: full-face helmet made of carbon-fiberglass-kevlar mix with fog-free Pinlock visor, Coolmax lining, forehead and chin ventilation. 269.90 euros at IXS
  • IXS Daria: women’s boots made of hydrophobic cowhide with Gore-Tex climate membrane, ankle and shin protectors and reinforced heel cap. 229.90 at IXS

  • IXS Carapax: women’s protector vest with back protector, kidney belt, neoprene trim in the back, lycra and mesh inserts in the front and side zip. 169.90 euros at IXS

Melanie’s conclusion:
“With the Dainese station wagon I thought before trying it on: You have to squeeze in there. So I was all the more surprised that, in combination with the soft, tight-fitting functional underwear, I was able to slip into this well-made combination very easily. My feeling is confirmed in the mirror: This combination fits perfectly. At most the sleeves could be a little longer. Or my arms are just too long. Because the tight-fitting IXS jacket could also have longer sleeves for me personally. The long-cut cuff of the gloves compensates for the small gap. The helmet fits perfectly and thanks to the Pinlock it protects very well against fogging – that’s indispensable for me as a glasses wearer. And it’s not just the boots that are very comfortable to wear. The pants also fit perfectly – although they don’t have a special women’s cut. The top-quality IXS set convinces me above all with its high level of comfort and its cuts that are tailored to the female figure. And with that I can confidently sit down in the cafe during the break.”

Anna in the hero leather suit.

With her height of 1.61 meters, the 27-year-old online editor poses a real challenge for many salespeople. Especially since she has very specific requirements for her motorcycle equipment: “I definitely want a leather suit because it just makes me feel safer.” At the same time, Anna also has a certain pragmatism: “But the whole thing is cut a bit more casual so that I can also wear my jeans under my trousers, so that I can quickly switch to my comfortable outfit during breaks.” This means that a tight but well-fitting ladies’ suit is out of the Dainese shop. Anna comes much better with the leather women’s collection from hero rightly. In contrast to the Arai helmet, which will give her a sleepless night shortly before the practical driving test.

What bought?

Complete leather equipment (with helmet) – total: 1316 euros

  • Held Alina: Ladies jacket made of cowhide with shoulder and elbow protectors (back can be retrofitted), mesh lining, glass stone applications and embroidery. 249 euros at Held
  • Held Vanessa: Women’s trousers made of cowhide with height-adjustable knee protectors (hips can be retrofitted), glass stone applications and embroidery. 229 euros at Held
  • Arai Chaser “Haga Red”: Full-face helmet made of fiberglass with anti-fog pinlock visor, chin and forehead ventilation and double D-ring fastener. 589 euros at Arai
  • Held Grace: Women’s touring boots made of cowhide with a Hydroguard climate membrane, gear reinforcement, ankle and shin protectors. 149.95 euros at Held
  • Held Mayra: Women’s sports gloves made of kangaroo leather with GRP knuckle protection, foam padding, Velcro fasteners on the wrist and cuff. 99.95 euros at Held

Anna’s conclusion:
Protection is my top priority. And in the Held-Kombi I just feel that I am in very good hands. I can easily wear my jeans under my pants – that’s important to me. The bottom line, including the boots and great gloves, is a super comfortable thing. Also the Arai sits really great. But the visor lock drove me crazy. If I don’t lock the visor, it will open at freeway speed. If I slide it completely closed, I have real problems opening it quickly. The night before the exam, I sat in the kitchen with my helmet on and practiced opening it with gloves on.

Natalie in the Drive textile suit.

The 34-year-old is leather in terms of style “too rocky”. While walking through Stuttgart’s motorcycle shops, the product manager didn’t just look at the look: “Of course, it should look good, but it also has to be comfortable and practical.” For the driving lessons in autumn and the upcoming start of the season, only a wind- and waterproof textile combination came into question, gloves and boots also had to be suitable for all weather conditions. Natalie’s most critical point when buying: the helmet. Because many models in size S just didn’t fit.

What bought?

Equipment (with helmet) – total sum: 1069.95 euros

  • Drive Lavenia: women’s textile jacket with Polo-Tex climate membrane, ventilation system, removable thermal lining, shoulder and elbow protectors (can be retrofitted on the back). 199.95 euros at Polo
  • Drive Lenja: women’s textile trousers with premium Polo-Tex climate membrane, ventilation zips, removable thermal lining, knee protectors (hips can be retrofitted). Available in normal, long and short sizes. 169.95 euros at Polo
  • Scorpion Exo 1000: full-face helmet made of fiberglass / kevlar mix with double D-ring closure, inflatable cheek pads, anti-fog visor and integrated sun visor. 339.95 euros from Detlev Louis
  • Vanucci All Terrain: Leather textile gloves with Sympatex climate membrane, ankle shell, reflective piping, Velcro straps on the wrist and cuff. 64.95 euros from Detlev Louis
  • Daytona Touring Star. Touring boots made of cowhide leather with Gore-Tex climate membrane, steel-reinforced sole, plastic reinforcements in the ankle area, heel reflector and switch reinforcement. 169.95 from Detlev Louis

Natalie’s conclusion:
I feel completely safe in my equipment. Mainly because it kept me really warm and dry on my first trips on the cold and wet autumn days. That will be exactly the right thing for the start of the season in a few weeks. With the Vanucci gloves, however, the lining should be better fixed, which unfortunately always comes out when you take them off. But I am particularly happy that with the Scorpion Exo 1000 I have found a helmet that fits me perfectly. When I tried it on, I had strong doubts whether I would even find something suitable.

Yvonne in the AJS textile suit.

“The search for a matching pair of pants”, says the 35-year-old picture editor at MOTORRAD, “almost drove me insane.” Because a large part of her height of 1.78 meters goes on her feet. In other words: She can’t do much with women’s trousers in standard sizes. Men’s trousers would have fit in length, “But the cut was impossible to wear.” To compensate for the frustration when buying trousers, the expensive boots from the luxury brand Belstaff wandered over the counter.

What bought?

Equipment (with helmet) – total: 1,387.85 euros

  • AJS Short: Textile combination in a special women’s cut made of Cordura fabric with climate membrane laminate, shoulder, elbow and knee protectors (hip and back can be retrofitted), reflective piping, removable thermal lining in checked design, waterproof outer pockets. Jacket 169.96 euros, pants 129.95 euros from Detlev Louis
  • Shoei X-Spirit II: Full-face helmet made of fiberglass with anti-fog pinlock visor, adjustable ventilation, anti-allergenic, removable and washable padding, double D-ring lock and emergency release. 669 euros from Detlev Louis
  • Vanucci Donna: women’s glove made of a leather-textile mix with ankle shell, Sympatex climate membrane, reflective piping, Velcro straps on the wrist and cuff. 59.95 euros from Detlev Louis
  • Belstaff Pure Motorcycle: Women’s boots made of cowhide with gear reinforcement, zip and Velcro fastener. 359 euros at Polo

Yvonne’s conclusion:
Even if I am not one hundred percent satisfied with the fit of the AJS trousers: The suit keeps you nice and warm and has so far held absolutely tight in the rain. I feel safe in the boots with the mega-high shaft, and thanks to the soft, very supple leather, they are absolutely comfortable to wear even when strolling through town. Nevertheless, I miss a stable, tightly enclosing ankle protection. But the absolute hit is the helmet. It’s super expensive, but it also sits great on the head.
