If you would like to go looking for something special, simply enter the term “Edition” on. But please bring some time with you, because you will land over 1200 hits with the top dog mobile.de alone. And you will find that the number of terms that come with the catchphrase “Edition” be combined, goes towards infinity. Fancy a small selection? Here you go: Black, White, Silver, Dark, First, Last, Travel, Summer, Cup, American Classic, Anniversary or – gladly taken and totally unusual – Limited and Special. Racing driver editions are also great: Senna and Rossi should pull globally, Max Neukirchner is a bit more special, and the Raga edition, marketed by GasGas since 2003, is probably more for insiders – Adam Raga, multiple trial world champion. You can know, but you don’t have to.

Edition is not the same as edition
As different as the edition first names may be, the motivation for the edition is just as uniform and unsurprising: You want to sell more. The spectrum ranges from the endeavor to add an even more elegant figurehead to a successful model to the desperate effort to knock off a grandfather clock that has long been a discontinued model for better or for worse. Smoke completely black over it, hang a couple of suitcases on it, nail a badge on – the Final Black Touring Edition is ready. We learn from this: Edition is not just edition. While some special models are already being traded as noble collector’s items as soon as they are presented, other models still have their tires flat as almost unique items. An exciting topic – also and especially for used bargain hunters.
Rossi rocket or razor-sharp 1000cc superbike?
Superbikes are the technology carriers of the manufacturers. If they are then refined into limited editions and offered used in top condition, you can not expect bargain prices. While the Yamaha “R46” is a unique homage to Valentino Rossi, the Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade looks like a GP racer. Now taste and budget have to decide.

Alejandro Garcia doesn’t look like a real Andalusian at first glance. The fleet of exceptionally well-kept and meticulously maintained superbikes of the 600 and 1000 class is also atypical for Mediterranean casualness. Machines of other types can hardly be found in the sparkling clean showroom of MGK-Motorrad (www.mgkmotorrad.de) in Neuss-Holzheim. Alejandro would like to significantly upgrade the appearance of the workshop and shop as soon as possible. The Spaniard exudes warmth and sympathy that is atypical for retailers. His wife says he is the “dad” of his mostly young clientele. During our visit, a young fan comes from Osnabruck, 200 kilometers away, to buy a superbike.
When Alejandro says that driving pleasure and the safety of his customers are most important to him, I believe him immediately. Every bike he buys is put through its paces before it is sold on. The Garcias have only been residing in Kieselstrasse 3 since last August, before that they lived in Stuttgart for a few years. Alejandro brought the exclusive Yamaha “R46” with him from Spain, where it was more spared than driven. The machine is a case for real fans: More admiration for Rossi in motorcycle form is hardly possible. But in this Yamaha, colors and graphic elements are compressed in such a way that they may not necessarily be aesthetically compatible with the masses. The first-hand bike is handed over with a fresh TuV and can be financed without a down payment if desired. The fact seems that no large motorcycle house can offer such a warm shopping experience as Alejandro Garcia. This thesis is correct?
Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade SP “Repsol Edition”
Breakable
Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade SP, EZ 1/2015, 6,000 km, 12,990 euros.
The Honda Center Dusseldorf is Germany’s largest branch. An 800 square meter palace of desires. One of them: the Honda CBR 1000 RR SP Fireblade Repsol. The demonstrator from 2015 ran 6000 kilometers. Not a single one of them left any traces. The 181 hp bike looks brand new. It scores with fresh Michelin Pilot Sport tires, Ohlins chassis, Brembo radial pliers, twelve-spoke rims, Rizoma license plate holders, LSL levers, Kellermann indicators, crash pads on the front and rear. For comparison: The 2017 Blade costs 18,000 euros, has 10 hp more and the full electronics package, which our Repsol Racer lacks. If you don’t want to race, you don’t need it, ABS is on board. 12,990 euros? Are in line with the market, says sales and service manager Marius Wildschutz (phone 0211 / 311315-221), who takes care of the customer’s well-being. He lacks time, too much rush for a coffee like Alejandro’s. Conclusion: Garcia offers more attention, Wildschutz sells more motorcycles.
Bella from Bologna or fine lady from Hinckley?
It should be sporty, at the same time not too exotic, but not too conventional either. The two European naked bikes from Ducati and triumph catch the eye and warm the heart. The Italo bike counts significantly fewer kilometers, but a few more years and is cheaper. Loyal Triumph, on the other hand, has only had one lover: Udo.
Triumph Speed Triple SE
Dentges
Triumph Speed Triple SE, EZ 2/2010, 36,300 km, 6,900 euros.
Udo Hagemeister is a wiry mid-fifties, retired professional soldier and now primarily a professional sympathizer. He has set up an enviable life for himself in the Unterallgau: a pretty house, a friendly woman and lots of hobbies, which he has combined for a new job as an adventure coach (www.mountain-touren-coaching.de). He guides customers through the mountains on snowshoes, mountain bikes or climbing ropes, instructs off-road novices in the Hechlingen Enduro Park and, as a personal motorcycle trainer, helps to untie the knot in the head when cornering. To do this, he drives his Triumph Speed triple SE and onboard camera at the stern ahead and films the clients who are reluctant to drive for subsequent analyzes. He bought the Speedy, limited in Germany to 100 pieces in the special edition trim, from an authorized dealer in 2010 and only changed it minimally with its bassier MIVV exhaust, filigree license plate holder and mini indicators (all original parts are unused in the attic). His personal dream bike was ready.
Otherwise everything is original and still in good condition today. The 36,000 kilometers all come from him, the first owner. All inspections documented, technical problems so far: nonexistent. “The chassis is a dream, the radial brakes bite well, the moped has been fun every meter since the first test drive. No comparison to the bandit I had before, ”enthuses Udo. Then why sell? Because as an instructor he could get a new piece of equipment at irresistibly cheap, and the Triumph Speed Triple SE would just stand there sadly. There is a certain melancholy behind the sun mind. Is that why the price is set so high? “Room for negotiation”, Udo smiles meaningfully.
Ducati Monster S4 Senna Edition
Dentges
Ducati Monster Senna Edition, EZ 10/2002, 28,300 km, 4,490 euros.
You can still chat about the price of the Ducati Monster S4 Senna with the former Ducati and now MV Agusta authorized dealer Peter Kuhnel from near Heilbronn. “4,200 euros is the lower limit,” he explains. The Senna Monster cost around a third more than a Honda Hornet 900 and was an exclusive sports sweeper at the time (2001 to 2003). Now it seems a bit old-fashioned to me, but still timelessly beautiful. And more important: affordable! Corroded manifolds and a few scratches are less beautiful, but 15 years won’t go unnoticed by a Bella like this. The dealer traded in the Duc five months ago. The customer always brought it to an inspection on time; for the past seven years, or 18,000 kilometers, it had been known in the company. The workshop history is therefore traceable. Connoisseur Kuhnel only nods calmly at the cue “Guarantee”.
First-hand travel enduro or stunt bike without stunt damage?
Some are proud of their successes at the legendary Paris-Dakar rally, others of a stunt riding world champion who chose something in-house for his work equipment. Both motorcycle manufacturers took advantage of the success to offer corresponding special models. There’s one in the far north KTM without rally experience and a BMW without a stunt show past.
KTM 990 Adventure Dakar “30th edition”
Herder
KTM 990 Adventure Dakar, EZ 6/2011, 39,601 km, 8,290 euros.
Hans-Hermann Ruser (60) is a street racer. Always, more precisely, since 1977, as a motorcycle dealer, from 1980 as a Yamaha dealer and in the 80s / 90s in 24-hour races in the World Endurance Championship. Hans-Hermann has also been an authorized KTM dealer since 2004, “because since then they have also had something decent for the street in their program”. Hans-Hermann’s passion for asphalt, of course, does not change the fact that friends of rough profiles are also welcome at his place. Or with his daughter Jessica.
In the early summer of 2016, the rather tough clerk was able to convince a Ruser customer to switch from his 990 Adventure to a 1290 Super Adventure, and the bright blue ABS-equipped Dakar special model has been waiting ever since “30th edition” to a new owner. He can look forward to a perfectly maintained machine at first hand. The differences to the basic model: suede seat cover, crash bars, Dakar logos, different hand shell and frame colors. Most importantly: The KTM 990 Adventure Dakar is equipped with the 116 hp 75-degree V-engine of the R version and thus has an output of 10 hp more than the basic model. As extras there are gel bench seats, GPS mounts, pannier racks, additional headlights and rear carrier plate, i.e. the complete tour package. And if you don’t want to buy anything, you should head towards Ruser, because the rural-romantic Haseldorfer Marsch, a good half hour drive west of the city of Hamburg, is always worth a tour.
BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer

BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer, EZ 5/2010, 8,138 km, 5,399 euros.
In contrast, you only drive to Norderstedt, which is sprawling north of Hamburg, if you absolutely have to. One reason could be the BMW F 800 R offered by master mechanic and BMW automobile service advisor Christian (35). This is not just any of the approximately 11,000 copies of the R first edition sold, it is the special model BMW F 800 R presented in 2010 “Chris Pfeiffer”. It looks pretty similar to the work equipment of the four-time stunt riding world champion and offers ex works, among other things, a special paintwork along with sponsor stickers, LED indicators and an Akrapovic rear silencer. Heated grips, on-board computer, front spoiler, rear wheel cover, K&N air filter and a second, slightly lower seat are also included. ABS not, “because then that wouldn’t be a real ‘Chris Pfeiffer’ – stunt drivers don’t have ABS”, so seller Christian. He’s actually more into real racing rolls, with which he can let off steam on a closed track. This predilection brought him three vertebral fractures at the end of 2015, and on “Advice” he wanted his wife to take it easy. No matter: the bones are healthy again, a very hot KTM Super Duke R is already in the garage – the BMW has to go!
All-world bikes or shopping experience as “Special edition”?
200 Suzuki Bandit and Yamaha FZ1 Fazer … that sounds pretty profane. But these two all-rounders were also once available in special designs. But it got very special at the on-site appointment. Because used uncle Jorg Lohse stumbled upon quite ordinary motorcycles, but extraordinary people, on his sightseeing tour.
Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit Limited Edition
Lohse
Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit Limited Edition, EZ 12/2005, 15,672 km, 3,650 euros.
The surprise is great when Herbert opens the garage door to his little motorcycle paradise. The Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit Limited Edition advertised by him has illustrious company: 1190er KTM Adventure, Triumph Tiger 800 XR, toxic gas-gas crosser, Honda VTR 1000. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper hang on the wall, plus posters from legendary racing events and start numbers from Cross-country competitions. That sounds like an eventful two-wheeler history. And indeed: Herbert has not only ridden a motorcycle for 33 years, but has also owned 32 motorcycles so far. There were almost no reservations: “The only thing I haven’t dared to do is work on Harleys!” the “limited edition” With her twelve years and 15,000 kilometers on the clock, she is freshly peeled from the egg on the main stand.
Absolutely original condition. The white-blue, flawless special paint is an eye-catcher, gives the everyday machine the touch of a shimmering exotic. Herbert bought the Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit Limited Edition 2012 from first hand with zero kilometers: “A tragic story. The previous owner really wanted to ride a motorcycle, but did not yet have a driver’s license. Before that works, he dies in an accident at work!” Herbert buys the Big Four from the widow, replaces the carburetor battery, which has been corroded by the long service life, with a tuning kit from Mikuni (“Original would be just as expensive, now it has even more oomph!”) and tours Europe with his wife Petra, who takes over the predecessor VTR 1000. Would be “limited edition” not the perfect collector’s item in this condition? Herbert grins and points to the misshapen object in the corner of the garage, which is hidden by a blanket: “I already have: A water buffalo from 1971, Suzuki’s legendary two-stroke 750.”
Yamaha FZ1 Fazer Limited Edition
Lohse
Yamaha FZ1 Fazer Limited Edition, EZ 3/2008, 15,229 km, 6,990 euros.
We continue to a no less legendary motorcycle paradise. Margarethe Laaks, widow of tuning legend Theo Laaks, who died in 2005, welcomes me south of Kassel. The petite woman is now leading the business into its 50th year with infinite enthusiasm for motorcycles. Hats off for that already! Margarethe handed in the Yamaha contract in 2012, but the crossed tuning forks are omnipresent here in Northern Hesse. A particularly beautiful Yamaha is in the shop window – the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer Limited Edition with ABS. It belonged to an air traffic controller who cannot use it in Mali now. The years have apparently passed by without a trace, the yellow lacquer dress conjures a grin on her face, which is reflected in sparkling metal parts. Would you sell it to me, Margarethe? She laughs mischievously: “I am not sure if you are the right one yet. I only sell when I really know that people and bikes are a good match!”
Interview with Matthias Meier
Harley-Davidson Hanover
Matthias Meier (47) on the subject of edition and special models.
Matthias Meier (47), managing director of the Harley-Davidson dealers in Frankfurt am Main, Hanover, Wiesbaden and Wetzlar, on the subject of edition and special models.
MOTORCYCLE: Harley is not there this time, but special models are your own specialty, right??
Matthias Meier: That’s right, there hasn’t been a year since the turn of the millennium in which we didn’t have a limited edition.
MOTORCYCLE: And limited really means limited?
Matthias Meier: Necessarily. It starts with our CVO models, what for “Custom Vehicle Operations” stands, Harley’s in-house refinement department. Of some CVO models, there were actually only ten to 15 pieces for Germany.
MOTORCYCLE: And they end up at the largest Harley dealer? Or how is the distribution going?
Matthias Meier: As soon as the models are on the Harley homepage, the dealers submit their orders, and then it is strictly according to the order received. With real customer contracts, which makes things absolutely fair.
MOTORCYCLE: Get away from the CVO models, which special models do you have otherwise?
Matthias Meier: Popular occasions are when the company or the relevant model celebrates a birthday or when the model is phased out. These are usually around 2,000 to 3,000 vehicles worldwide, 100 to 150 of which end up on the German market. They are also all numbered consecutively.
MOTORCYCLE: “added value” of the special models?
Matthias Meier: For otherwise comparable models, this can amount to 2,000 to 3,000 euros, which are paid more when sold. Special models are usually particularly well maintained.
