In theory, you should only wear protective clothing that has been found to be good in tests. In terms of safety, these would be: leather suit with CE protectors, leather gloves with proper ankle protection, high boots made of abrasion-resistant material (preferably leather) with ultra-stable soles, reinforcements and shock-absorbing protectors. Touring riders, for whom weather protection (active safety!) Plays a major role, are best served with high-end textile suits, including a functioning membrane (such as Gore-Tex), reinforced with aramid fabric (heat-resistant, cut-proof, abrasion-resistant) in the fall zones. Such equipment costs in each case: quickly over 2000 euros. Then you drive safely.
No protective equipment in the closet due to lack of money?
So much for the theory. The practice looks different. Figures from current accident research show that normal street clothing was used in over half of all motorcycle injuries. Only 21 percent wore complete protective equipment. The rate is even lower for passengers. A helmet, however, is worn by 99 percent of all motorcyclists in Germany. When it comes to head injuries, motorcyclists who have had an accident stand out positively compared to other road users: “Only” 20 percent – for drivers it is around 30 percent, for cyclists it is over 50 percent. So there is no question that the helmet helps. And all in all, properly dressed, in the physiological sense of clothing, is the best way to drive. But: Who wants to squeeze into racing leather or the multi-layer textile combination that weighs a kilo for the short drive to the bakery? Sure, something can always happen, and after a worst-case scenario, any excuse about negligent clothing is invalid. But what if there is no protective equipment hanging in the closet due to a lack of money? Let the machine stand?
Now at the latest you should remember your own motorcycle youth and say: Dream on! Of course, most of us have climbed the machine with sneakers and jeans and – especially seriously – without gloves. And luckily they didn’t blow up straight away. We asked the members of the MOTORRAD-Helden-Club (www.motorrad-helden.de) and asked them about their “clothing sins”. Or better said: we got tips on which civilian clothes on the motorcycle are best for their experiences. On the basis of further everyday observations and dealer surveys, the editorial team identified five sets with a total of 20 products that are intended to represent the clothing choices made by Germany’s motorcyclists. If you don’t use protective equipment. Even if, for example, only one sneaker has been specifically assessed, conclusions relevant to motorcycling can be drawn about functionality while driving, weather and fall protection for similar models.
Hunting boots, waxed all-weather jackets, flight jackets
Noticeable: Many of the misappropriated products are or were originally considered technical clothing just like motorcycle clothing. Classic pieces are also very popular: hunting boots (Red Wing) and waxed all-weather jackets (Barbour), which have been in service since the 1950s, or flight jackets with roots dating back to the 1930s. Most frequently, however, the club members surveyed named army boots. This comparison shows that they do a flawless service for motorcyclists. Just like Bergmann and Blundstone’s safety shoes.
From the point of view of accident researchers and safety clothing experts, a torsion-resistant sole is particularly important. Ruprecht Muller, engineer at the ADAC Technik Zentrum Landsberg, explains the advantages: “In motorcycle accidents, the foot is often crushed by the heavy machine. Solid soles, toe caps and ankle reinforcements then act like a protective cage. ”Sneakers, even those with high opening, do not offer nearly this torsional stiffness, so that even falls at low speeds can lead to avoidable, complicated injuries. Like most motorcycle boots, thick botts have a problem: they are usually too uncomfortable in everyday life. It looks similar with gloves, pants and jackets. Expert Muller speaks of “sacrificial material”, i.e. everything that remains on the asphalt as abrasion, shreds and flakes in the event of a fall (before the skin is on …), and remarks: “The mass does it! But this results in a conflict between comfort and security. “
Leather almost always has the edge
Good motorcycle clothing has other safety features such as folded and double seams and is usually bulky enough. Usual leather suits weigh between four and five kilos, textile suits about one kilo less. But even with the tested street clothes, there are very decent pieces in this regard (see individual reviews). Incidentally, due to its natural composition, leather almost always has the edge. According to the “Darmstadt method for protective clothing testing”, an outer material that comes into contact with the road in the event of a fall should maintain a good balance between sliding distance and time and avoid hole formation as long as possible. Leather has very good coefficients of friction, as does aramid fabric (Kevlar), and solid denim fabric (jeans) can be classified as decent depending on the quality. On the other hand, thin polyester fabrics that melt and tear quickly, also due to simple seams, and those that encourage slipping in the event of a fall are bad.
Certified protectors achieve the best effect
Dietmar Otte, Head of Accident Research at the Medical University in Hanover, however, underlines the limits. According to the generally recognized AIS injury scale, from injury class three and higher, i.e. open fractures, organ injuries and other irreversible damage (occur in around twelve percent of all motorcycle accidents), the protective effect of clothing can hardly be measured. However, over 60 percent only have injuries according to AIS 1 (abrasions, bruises, etc.) and around 30 percent according to AIS 2 (for example simple, well-healing fractures). It is precisely for such cases that proper clothing, regardless of whether it is driver equipment or clothing that is not used for its intended purpose, is effective.
With a clever choice of clothes you can influence how certain injuries can be reduced to a tolerable level. All experts also agree that certified protectors on the fall zones (joints, hips, chest area, back) achieve the best effect (impact and abrasion protection). Unfortunately, integrated protectors in designated motorcycle clothing do not always sit in the right place or slip, which of course does not help much. Now critics may comment: “But still better than jeans and street shoes!” One can counter this: With the right selection of non-motorcycle clothing (see MOTORCYCLE recommendations), which is cleverly “tuned” with additional protectors, it drives sometimes actually better and safer. Especially since you shouldn’t underestimate the feel-good factor: In any case, it is always better to wear your favorite, comfortable but safely made clothes than when the real motorcycle protective equipment is hanging on the hanger at home.

Noble, but very functional clothing for cruising for eternity.

The focus was on the driving tests. Each set was sent on a selected test round according to the area of application and type of machine (cruiser, sports machine, etc.). At speeds of up to 250 km / h, aerodynamic behavior, weather protection, wearing comfort and the fit of the clothing could be easily determined and assessed depending on the speed. If there was moisture protection (e.g. climate membrane), the products were subjected to a moisture test. Both prolonged heavy rain and short drizzle were simulated. In addition, the testers in the Sas-Tec laboratory in Markgroningen measured shock absorption values based on the standards for personal protective equipment (“PPE”).

Street clothing on a motorcycle a taboo per se? Pure prejudice. When it comes to footwear, the Bundeswehr boots achieved the “test victory”. But I wouldn’t carry it – too heavy, too unwieldy. The Red Wings made of rich leather are the best compromise between safety and comfort. When it comes to trousers, the double quilted cotton work trousers and the luxury traditional leather are in the foreground – pure money: 50 for 1200 euros! The thick Edwin jeans are also good. Also available as a special series made of even heavier denim (20 oz and up) – then not just a fashion hit. A classic aviator jacket (also available without patch) made of kid leather is a good investment: robust, comfortable to wear and safer than the much cheaper Alpha bomber jacket, which offers good weather protection. When it comes to gloves, the extremely sensitive Western leather gloves win.
