BRP Can-Am Spyder Roadster: Three-wheel fun vehicle

The driver of the Can-Am Spyder Roadster can feel as free as on a motorcycle and safe as in a car.

The innovative tricycle offers fresh air fun with a simultaneous anti-tipping guarantee.

The driver must wear a helmet, but a car driver's license is sufficient to drive. However, the fun mobile is not exactly cheap: at least 17,299 euros are due. Anyone who chooses the foolproof automatic instead of the manual transmission will be there for 19,099 euros.

Show effect included

A strong appearance is definitely included in the purchase price; the exotic vehicle with two front wheels and a single rear wheel makes necks twist everywhere. Especially in the yellow and black standard paintwork and with a high-speed whirring engine, it looks like an aggressive insect on the run. The driver sits like on a motorcycle: the engine between his thighs, his hands on the low handlebars. In front of him he sees the wedge-shaped front section, reminiscent of a jet ski or a snowmobile. The resemblance is no coincidence: the manufacturer of the Can-Am, the Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), is one of the world's largest producers of such recreational vehicles.
The so-called quads, four-wheeled off-road vehicles, are also part of the product portfolio. While these move rather awkwardly on paved roads due to the lack of a rear axle differential, the Spyder roadster is easy to maneuver thanks to the power steering and the driven single rear wheel. However, when cornering at high speed, the centrifugal force also pulls heavily on it – and on the driver. Since the rigid assembly does not allow the front wheels to lean, you have to counteract with your body weight. This active driving style takes some getting used to and is thrilling at high speeds; but it also accounts for a good part of the driving pleasure.

106 hp, ABS and ESP

The 79 kW/106 hp two-cylinder engine from Rotax with 998 cubic centimeters also makes its contribution, pushing the three-wheeler, which weighs only 316 kilograms, forward with great force. It takes just 4.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill, and the top speed is around 190 km/h. ABS, traction control and an electronic stability program, as known from cars, ensure safety.

Dear cruising

In general, however, relaxed cruising is the Spyder's territory. In the cooling wind, on comfortable seats and with an unrestricted panoramic view of the landscape, the trike unfolds its full appeal. With a load space of at least 44 liters and an optional luggage bag, weekend trips for two are also possible. Above all, riders with no motorcycle experience will appreciate the serial electronic shifting system: the gears can be changed without using the clutch or manually reducing the throttle using the shift paddles on the steering wheel; when stopped at traffic lights, the electronics automatically switch back and disengage so that it is impossible for the engine to stall. The gear change itself is quick and almost jerk-free. Alternatively, there is a classic motorcycle circuit with clutch lever and foot pedal. Braking is via ABS foot brake, which acts on all three wheels, there is no brake lever on the handlebars.
The targeted clientele for the Can-Am Spyder Roadster are not only car drivers but also former motorcyclists who prefer the safe driving experience on three wheels. The tricycle cannot be more than a second vehicle, because it not only combines the advantages of a car and a motorcycle, but also their disadvantages. On the one hand it offers no protection against wind and weather and has only limited transport capacity, on the other hand it costs as much as a well-equipped small car and also requires the same parking space. But as we all know, people like to make compromises when it comes to driving fun.

  1. That’s fun
I drove the device today. Great fun, but the lack of cornering inclination … for me as a motorcyclist it took some getting used to. The steering forces in the curve too. With a motorcycle, you have almost no forces on the handlebars due to the bank, but here you have to pull well at high speeds. That’s why I feel more comfortable and safer on the bike.

  2. Great, we like it,
we will try to rent such a tricycle for a sun vacation. there will definitely be a waiting list!

  3. 5 to 7 liters per 100 km
Expensive toys for people who have too much money. If anything, I would buy a real motorcycle. For the price I also get a good mid-range car. It uses just as much, if not less, and also offers space for 5 people plus luggage. As I said, a nice toy, nothing more.

  4. toy
Whether the almost 20.000.00 € is appropriate for a toy, one could discuss that, although there is also a lot of safety technology in the device. But which good mid-range car costs only 20.000.00 € ?!? I test drove it today and it’s really a lot of fun. My son also found it on the back 🙂

  5. reverse.-There were tricycles for children 20 years ago
Even then it was a very stable (muscle power-driven) children’s vehicle (also called Liliput)

  6. Completely superfluous and
dangerous toy. This has no place on the street and hopefully will not be allowed or allowed in our country. forbidden.

  7. I totally agree with you:
Motorcycles with 200hp are even more dangerous and useless.

  8. A great part
I can’t afford it, but I’ll definitely rent the Can-Am Spyder if I get the chance.

  9. Rush machine for the ruthless!
This is a pure riot machine for inconsiderate people. Making noise, jostling, racing, etc.

  10. So I’m ruthless then?
If I had the wherewithal right now – I would buy this machine immediately. But why am I ruthless then?? And what does driving such a machine have to do with riots? A single article is enough and the prejudice is already manifest. As the doctors say, let them talk….

  11. And how loud are these? "fun"-vehicles
And how many people are disturbed by the noise, made sick?

  12. trike 2.0
Like the trikes of the 80s, this tricycle perfectly combines the disadvantages of the motorcycle with the disadvantages of the car.
