The 1998 vintage of disguised motorcycles has a whole range of interesting new products and a number of proven models to offer.

Tea fairings of modern motorcycles fulfill several tasks: First of all, they offer the designers surfaces and shapes for creative design. Then there would of course be wind and weather protection for the driver. And finally, the aerodynamic influence on driving performance and the clever ducting of the intake air for the engine. Real jack-of-all-trades, behind which very different engine concepts are hidden.
At Aprilia, after a long period of maturation, the RSV Mille, powered by a 1000cc V-Twin, is in the starting blocks with Italian chic. For the injection-fed units, the Italians promise 128 hp with a vehicle weight of just 210 kilograms. Also in the range: the popular RS 250 two-stroke rocket.
Bimota is still working on the injection of the Vdue, which was introduced in 1996. It remains to be seen whether it will hit the German market in spring as planned. The Bimotisti supplemented their otherwise unchanged model range with the SB 8 R, which is powered by the Suzuki TL 1000 S engine.
Nothing new at BMW. Tea expected sports boxer is still under lock and key, the R and K models are entering the new season unchanged.
Ducati adopts the 900 SS to resurrect it in a new form. The most visible change is the fashionable, chic disguise, technically new an engine management with injection. The ST 2 sports tourer enters the second model year, and the SPS versions of the 916 and 748 series shine in 1998 with titanium connecting rods and carbon fiber air boxes.
Honda relies on Vorsprung durch Technik for its innovations, otherwise on model constancy. The VFR replaces the popular all-round queen VFR 750. The new one brings automotive technology on two wheels with an integral brake system, injection system and regulated catalytic converter. Also new: the NT 650 V Deauville, an elegant mid-range touring bike based on the NTV 650. The CBR 900 RR has only been modified in a few points such as the brakes, swing arm and exhaust system.
The most exciting disguises at Kawasaki are worn by the brand new ultralight aircraft ZX-6R and ZX-9R, which aim to be nothing less than class dominance. They combine consistent lightweight construction with top performance. Otherwise also with Kawasaki model constancy: many old acquaintances such as the GPX 600 R..
Laverda is expanding the 750 S model range with the fully faired Carenata and the Formula, which is aimed at storm performance. Thanks to the increased compression and a little precision work, its engine reaches 92 hp, which should have an easy time with the filigree Italian.
The most spectacular plastic garment comes from another Italian manufacturer and bears the glorious name MV Agusta. Behind the F4-750 is the long announced Cagiva F4 with an in-line four-cylinder with radially arranged valves developed by Ferrari. 126 HP should be compared to less than 200 kilograms, over 270 km / h top are promised. Hopefully the MV is as fast as it looks.
Suzuki has taken on its two-cylinder engine intensively. Tea fully encased TL 1000 R is therefore not only more powerful than its sister S, which is still sold, but has also been completely redesigned. The same applies to the GSX-R 600 and the GSX-R 750, which even come up with an injection system. The GSX 600 F even has a completely new, organically rounded shape. Good old friends like the GSX 750 F, the RF 900 R and the GSX-R 1100 W have disappeared.
Triumph gave the T595 Daytona a more lean angle-friendly manifold system and a new, fuel-saving map.
D.he long overdue new paths are treading: The spectacular YZF-R1 outbids all the competition on paper. Uncompromisingly light and compact, with a full liter displacement of 150 hp and weighing around 200 kilos – a true overbike that vigorously polishes up the somewhat grayed-out Yamaha image. The FZS 600 Fazer stands somewhat in the shadow of its omnipotent sister. 96 hp are promised for its YZF 600 R engine.
