140 hp from a two-valve engine from the 1970s is a remarkable announcement. This is exactly what bike-side capo Klaus Dony does for them Kawasaki Z 1000 J, which he has thoroughly prepared for long distance races. 1260 cm³, forged light alloy pistons, high compression, double ignition, Web Cam Stage III camshafts and a lightened Falicon crankshaft are among the components that are responsible for this.

Thomas Schmieder started with the bike-side team on this Kawasaki Z 1000 J in the 4-hour race of classic superbikes in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium – against big names like TT hero John McGuinness and former endurance world champion Richard Hubin.

Thomas comments on the driving performance gap self-deprecatingly and realistically: “As a committed middle grader, you can hardly believe where and how hard the really fast guys pull on the cable. My best lap time ever achieved here: 2:53 min, during the day. Not bad for me. But (ex) professionals only need about forty here, even at night.”

Despite all the hurdles and all the efforts: In the end, all team members were beaming. And even before the racing calendar for 2017 is known, the planning for the next Classic Endurance season is already underway.

Racing with classic superbikes

The Bikers Classics in Spa-Francorchamps / Belgium has held four-hour races for classic motorcycles for ten years. In 2013, the organizer DG Sport established the European Classic Series with the support of UEM / FIM Europe. This endurance championship is an official European championship in three classes for machines with at least two cylinders.

The class 750 TT allows four-stroke engines with two valves per cylinder and a maximum of 750 cm³ and two-stroke twins between 340 and 500 cm³, which were built until the end of 1985.

In the class Classic 1000 start two-valve four-stroke engines up to 1000 cc and four-valve four-cylinders up to a maximum of 750 cc, which were produced until the end of 1981.

For the class Maxi Classic machines over 1000 cm³ and built up to 1982 are approved. Required are 18-inch wheels, a maximum of 150 mm rear tires and two-piston brake calipers. Rain tires, upside-down forks and more gears than in the standard transmission are prohibited.

There are three races per season with two to three drivers (B license required). In 2016 the races took place in Le Castellet / Paul Ricard (April), in Spa-Francorchamps (July) and in Aragón (October). The racing calendar for 2017 has not yet been set, but Spa on the first weekend in July has already been set.
