MOTORRAD long-term testers on a beer tour

Men’s dreams – the rest of the world may think of slippery things, the MOTORRAD editorial team doesn’t! We even dream of two wheels. Especially from the action team’s beer tour. Now it was time. A situation report between hops and malt.

Stefan Kaschel

11/14/2011

The first pages of the action team catalog are tough. Glaciers in Patagonia and Alaska, Brazilian waterfalls, Australian deserts or Scandinavian snow landscapes. Everything is beautiful, everything is exotic – but unfortunately everything is completely unsuitable when it comes to asking the assembled long-term test fleet for a traditional autumn drive. But then, somewhere between Istria and southern Poland, the eye automatically gets caught. “Hops, malt and beer”, headlines the team members, promise pure cornering fun in combination with boozy beer tastings under the aegis of motorcycle fan, hotelier and beer sommelier Bernhard Sitter. And where? On the doorstep, in the Bavarian Forest.

That sounds good! But what is the weather doing? In mid-October it can get uncomfortable in German low mountain ranges. A wet and cold front is rolling in from the northwest, a temperature drop of several degrees is to be expected. But there is a tiny spot in the southeast, around Passau, where dry weather can be expected for the next two or three days. That must be Providence and fits us like a cool blond between the spleen and liver. Don’t waste any time now, make a quick call to the “1. Beer and feel-good hotel “Gut Riedelsbach. Rooms are free, all right – we’re moving out tomorrow.

Or better: seven move out, because one leaves a little earlier. Stefan got the Mini-Duke from KTM caught, a GPS installed and practically drives as the crow flies, while the rest of the troop arrives via Munich and Deggendorf. He does not want to do around 400 kilometers of motorway with the “Quietscherle”. Everyone else is eternally grateful to him, they don’t have to sneak over the BAB at 110 km / h. In return, something else limits the travel average, namely the limited range of the Aprilia RSV4 R. After exactly 220 kilometers of restrained motorway travel and 42 kilometers on reserve, the tank is absolutely ebb, after six kilometers of pushing the passengers an Aral gas station is finally in sight. 16.2 liters go into the dust-dry Aprilia fuel barrel – that makes 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers, in the end the Italian diva will level off at 7.8 liters. “She’s already starting to drink,” sneers David, the 24-year-old two-wheel mechanic and guest starter from Goppingen, who apparently has not fully understood the deep cultural meaning of this trip. He also doesn’t know the usual Aprilia drinking habits. Last year, on the autumn trip on Lake Garda, with many meters of altitude and without a braking 125 cc in the field, it just barely missed the ten-liter mark.

But back to the Bavarian region, exit Aicha vorm Wald, idyllically situated between Deggendorf and Passau. The second refueling stop – and the meeting point with Stefan, who needed almost an hour longer overland. And about 500 more gear changes, because the small four-valve engine struggles with real effort, but despite its brave 16 HP in the endurance test input measurement (KTM promises a nominal 15 HP), it sometimes struggles with the driving resistance without success. “This constant switching between fifth and sixth gear is annoying,” grumbles the 1.86-man and scooter fan, who especially high-performance dwarfs like the KTM usually spur on to great driving deeds, while he can’t win anything like the Aprilia.

Victory Hammer S, Kawasaki Z 1000, Ducati Multistrada 1200 S, KTM 125 Duke, Honda CBR 600 F, Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere and Triumph Tiger 800 XC at the autumn ride.

Speaking of preferences and prejudices: Of course, on the autumn trip with eight such different motorcycles, each of the eight drivers expects, shaped by countless comparative tests, that such different types of motorcycles with sometimes even contradicting key data cannot ride together. But that is a mistake. On the contrary: Here, where instead of the little things, only the really big things count (or how should you put a displacement difference of around 1,600 cubic centimeters between the KTM and the Victory describe?), the motorcycle world is moving very close together in a wonderful way.

Would you like an example? When fleet manager Rainer is his beloved Hammer S Drifting with devotion through the wonderfully flowing bends in the direction of Furstenstein and Schonberg, Stefan on the KTM behind is very drowsy out of concern for him, although the incline at the moment is a joke for the narrow-tire KTM (150/70 to 250/40) and he would like to let it run into the corner much faster. But once the Hammer S is on course, it slams around 140 Newton meters and the full grip of the mighty tire forward so sustainably that the little Duke sees no land at all and lets it tear off. But the solution is simple. From now on, the KTM drives up, the others behind. Boring for the horsepower showers, do you think? No, on the contrary. First of all, it is always an uplifting sight when colleagues whistle around the corners like a string of pearls. Second, little Duke is not that slow. The district is also involved in this. Not only does every village have its own brewery here, but also curves, curves, curves.

Via Grafenau and Frauenau it goes in a detour to Zwiesel, before a glance at the clock warns to turn back. Curves back and forth, as soon as the sun is gone, it gets really cold in this beautiful part of Germany too. And at Gut Riedelsbach, about 60 kilometers away in the border triangle of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, Bernhard is waiting with his self-brewed beer.

So back, heading south-east. Again it is exchanged. It is noticeable that despite individual personal preferences, one category is right at the front in the driver’s favor. Ducati Multistrada 1200 S, triumph Tiger 800 XC, Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere – regardless of whether you are arriving on the motorway or on a third-order country road, the enduro bikes are occupied first. The reasons for this are quickly named here, where there is neither prestige nor tough competition and no one has to be faster than the other. By far the most important: the relaxed seating position, which even sports and chopper freaks will appreciate after a few hundred kilometers in the saddle. In addition, this type of vehicle has the ability to build trust from the very first few meters. While switching from the Victory to the KTM or the Kawasaki Z 1000 Aprilia has to shoot at the new one every time. These moderately tire, comfortably sprung and properly motorized all-rounders are suitable for every road and every driver. Incidentally, a characteristic that also applies to the latest addition to the long-term test fleet, the Honda CBR 600 F. It sits calmly on it, too, and feels neutral. However, it cannot offer the comfort of travel enduros, and certainly not the pressure from the low revs.

The long-term testers led by the Honda CBR 600 F followed by Aprilia and Triumph.

It is already dark when we reach Gut Riedelsbach. The guest room is full, Bernhard Sitter welcomes us in work clothes. For him that means: knee-length leather pants, waistcoat with countless stickers, wooden shoes with different fur trimmings, barefoot. Always, also in winter and also on the motorcycle, that is important to him. His motorcycle – in addition to a veteran Honda Varadero, recently also a fat Triumph Rocket. His dealer is good and somehow this bike suits him, doesn’t it? We look at him, look at each other, nod. Something other than a 2.3-liter device was definitely out of the question for this man.

Probably not another job either. Sitter brews beer, good beer. Sitter Brau, in our own brewery in homeopathic doses. Dark, blond, pils – each his own, everything fresh, because the beer from house breweries, explains Sitter, is not canned and can only be kept for a few weeks, while the beer from large breweries can be enjoyed between six months and a year thanks to the appropriate filling technology. Therefore, his brew must be eaten as soon as possible, explains the boss. Okay, understand, we’re helping.

The next morning everyone is up anyway. Sitter and his rocket are ready to take off. Textile trousers, softshell jacket, bare feet in two-tone wooden shoes. First to Austria to refuel (the Aprilia has been running on reserve for some time), then through the Muhlkreis over to the Czech Republic in the Bohemian Forest, along the Moldau reservoir, back on the other side, up to Krumau – and back. The Aprilia scares the cows with its start-up roar and wakes the other guests, the Kawa blares to itself with increased idle, the Ducati starter strangles the pistons over top dead center in the cold, and the Victory’s gearbox hits of themselves shaking the Bavarian Forest. Kawa (retrofitted), Triumph and Yamaha heat the driver’s hands using heated grips, and electric blankets are needed for the super sport tires of the RSV4 R. The beer specialist in advance shows off a lot, uses his knowledge of the route, but David bravely sticks to his rear wheel with the little KTM. Just don’t lose your momentum.

Here, in the border area, not long ago systems and worldviews collided, which is also reflected in the settlement. The western shore of the Vltava reservoir, near the old border fortifications, is almost uninhabited, the other side is a Czech holiday paradise. Again and again our tour guide turns off the main traffic routes, knows small and very small streets, leads us to corners that we would never have found. And say goodbye at the dam wall of the lake, while we still make the delightful trip via Krumau and then return to Riedelsbach via Strazny in the northwest.

In the evening, after a short treatise on beer (see box on the right), a guided tour through the in-house private museum before the discussion, which is increasingly more prominent, almost inevitably leads to two-wheeled world views. Markus, the photographer and hobby crosser, was riding a super sports bike for the first time in years – and couldn’t get along with the Aprilia at all. “Nobody needs that!” He complains about their supposed weaknesses such as the stiff chassis, the sporty seating position and the thunderstorm sound of the 1000cc V4. The others laugh, because despite the leisurely pace, Markus bravely drove the field in front of him. The author, on the other hand, desperately struggles with the Victory quirks as always. The stiff clutch, the brutal gear shocks, the stubbornness of the hammer rear section, the wide arches, too dark and cow dung – you really have to like that. Like fleet manager Rainer, who always likes to take up this fight with a thieving grin and usually wins it. “This is a man’s motorcycle,” it sounds like a beer from his corner, “I’ll drive you all into the ground with it! Handling, comfort, accuracy – that’s something for children! “

The action team’s beer tour – a situation report between hops and malt.

The others laugh. But they also know: He’s serious. Whenever the Victory became free, Rainer wasn’t far. He had to be forced onto the Aprilia. Just like Stefan, who likes to use the red and white for it Kawasaki Z 1000 rose. The powerful engine in combination with the short translation praised, but above all the mounted Michelin Pilot Road 3, which turns a sometimes stubborn bitch into a smooth curve queen. “It now turns in super easily and precisely,” enthuses Stefan, “and then holds the line razor-sharp.”

“But the KTM can do much better than that,” adds David, the guest starter. “I really enjoyed it today on the little one. Rush in front of the pack, stab the corners with a lot of momentum. I want to experience something! ”“ Of course, ”says head tester Karsten. “Here and now, in this colorful field. But imagine you have a thing like that. Every day, at home, on the way to work, on Sundays on the home route. Then you just want to be able to accelerate. Just like on the Ducati, where things are really moving forward. Or at least like on the Honda! “

Embarrassed silence. The Honda, exactly. In all the debates on the road and here at the table, the youngest child in the long-term test fleet never played a role. Always drove with me, was always there, never stood out. “Not even the one who was sitting on it,” says Karsten. “Because she can do everything, does everything, is simply good. And it is guaranteed not to break either. What more do you want? ”“ Perhaps to experience something? ” The fronts are in place, the debate is coming to a head. Eight drivers, nine opinions. Bernhard brings new beer – and a suggestion: “Please vote anonymously. Everyone names the three motorcycles that they have enjoyed the most today. There are points for the places – and in the end a winner. ”He laughs:“ You are professionals in this regard. You always do! “

The man is right. The pieces of paper are pulled out, written down, crossed out, revised again. In the end, a clear result: The Yamaha wins by a margin (14 points) Ducati (9) and Triumph (8). Three travel enduros in the first three places. An absolutely understandable result. “And tomorrow we’re going to Austria to the Hofstetten brewery,” promises Bernhard. “Down to the Danube valley and up again, with plenty of curves and plenty of fun for everyone.” We’ll drink to that! cheers!

Victory Hammer S.

Victory Hammer S..

It is the displacement giant in the test fleet and, together with the dwarf KTM Duke, also the exotic. And she’s been there for two years, which says a lot about her popularity with long-distance travel.

But in this regard, many do her wrong, because measured against its martial appearance, the Hammer S drives very well. Of course, the possibilities of a 250cc rear tire have to be worked out with a lot of physical effort, the clutch is a case for men with iron fists, and the transmission has the flexibility of a scrap press.

But that is not the weak point of the Hammer S. The Achilles heel is a tiny alternator regulator that forced the fat V2 into the workshop for the third time. In addition, there were only routine checks, two new brake pads and four new sets of tires. That makes us confident for the remaining 16,000 kilometers, especially since the engine sounds very healthy mechanically.

Data
Two-cylinder four-stroke 50-degree V-engine, 1731 cm³, 66.0 kW (90 PS) at 4900 rpm, 140 Nm at 3250 rpm, tires 130 / 70R 18; 250 / 40R 18, seat height * 710 mm, tank capacity 17.0 liters, price 16,240 euros without additional costs.

KTM 125 Duke

KTM 125 Duke.

As a 125cc model, she has not 50,000, but only 25,000 kilometers to go. And stopped once, even though it was only in the fleet for a short time. “Ignition coil defective” was the diagnosis after a good 4000 kilometers, since then the little Duke has been running flawlessly again.

The driving performance of the 137-kilogram flea, however, is somewhat disappointing. In order to reach the specified maximum speed of 115 km / h on the speedometer, which is exactly displayed, a lot of start-up is necessary, on slight inclines or headwinds you need fifth gear.

Overtaking is therefore a daring maneuver and should be carefully considered. The chassis, on the other hand, gives no cause for complaint, is nimble and bustling. This is why the KTM is particularly popular in city traffic, while on this autumn trip it always drove well when it was able to set the pace up front. With a lot of momentum into the curve – that is the patent recipe with which the little Duke also drives well in the field of racing cars.

Data
Single-cylinder four-stroke engine, 125 cm³, 11.3 kW (15.4 PS) at 10500 / min, 12 Nm at 8000 / min, tires 110/70 ZR 17; 150/60 ZR 17, seat height * 850 mm, tank capacity 11.0 liters, price 3995 euros without additional costs.

Triumph Tiger 800 XC.

She came in April and already has over 27,000 kilometers on the spoke wheels. If you extrapolate that, you would probably come up with a new endurance test record, but winter will thwart your plans. Nevertheless: The British woman travels a lot and far. In the MOTORRAD endurance test, an unmistakable sign that many different types of riders feel at home on it.

In fact, like the Yamaha, the Triumph is characterized by two things. It is reliable, never broke down, only got tires (three times), a new mapping and new brake pads on the front. And it is easy to drive, offers neither engine nor chassis surprises, but impresses with its predictability. The fact that it also has large but also broad suitcases makes it just as interesting for long-distance travelers as its acceptable test consumption of 5.4 liters and the associated range.

Data
Three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 799 cm³, 70.0 kW (95 PS) at 9300 rpm, 79 Nm at 7850 rpm, tires 90 / 90-21; 150 / 70R-17, seat height * 855-875 mm, tank capacity 19.0 liters, price ** 11962 euros without additional costs.

Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Tenere.

She’ll be gone soon, and many will regret that. Over the last 36,000 kilometers, the big and heavy XT has made many friends in the editorial office. Great chassis, good ergonomics, high long-distance comfort – these are the pounds with which the Tenere can grow.

You will forgive her for her clutch, which was practically worn out at the start of the test (the Yamaha had already clocked 10,000 kilometers). The clutch discs were replaced at around 22,000 kilometers, and the timing chain tensioner at 38,000. That’s it, except for the tires and brake pads. But the oil level indicator lamp was annoying, as it often lights up while driving, although there was enough oil in the dry sump tank. In addition, the control is extremely cumbersome. The Yamaha also burned some lubricant, up to half a liter under full load on the motorway.

Data

Honda CBR 600 F..

What’s going to break there? That was the first question asked at the beginning of the endurance test, and it is justified. In fact, a super sports engine throttled down to 102 hp and a conventional chassis do not give rise to the assumption that they will fall apart immediately.

So what happened during the first 11,500 kilometers? Nothing at all. The tires were changed at almost 6000, from the standard Bridgestone BT012 to the noticeably more manageable Michelin Pilot Road 3, that was it. Colleague Harry Humke fell over once, broke off the mirror and blinker. Overall, the CBR behaves as inconspicuously as it did on this autumn trip. Vibrates noticeably, is not a torque giant, but comfortable and easy to use. Anyone who calls it boring now may be right. Nevertheless, the little sportswoman cannot be blamed. On the contrary: it works splendidly and is a good choice, especially for less experienced drivers with an athletic heart.

Data
Four-cylinder, four-stroke in-line engine, 599 cm³, 75.0 kW (102 PS) at 12000 rpm, 64 Nm at 10500 rpm, tires 120/70 ZR 17; 180/55 ZR 17, seat height * 790 mm, tank capacity 18.4 liters, price 8990 euros without additional costs.

Kawasaki Z 1000.

As rough as the Z 1000 may appear – like so many Japanese motorcycles, it is a model of reliability. Since she went to the editorial garage, the set of tires on the Kawa has been changed five times, once the chain set, once the front brake pads and once, under guarantee, the battery and the lock set, because the battery gave up and the ignition was hooked. That was it. Nothing, no defects, no abnormalities. The Z 1000 ran – and runs – best with Michelin’s Pilot Road 3, which helps the slow handling and the indifferent steering behavior of the Z on the jumps. Otherwise there are still pithy vibrations to report. But they fit a motorcycle with this appearance just like the short gear ratio or the front wheel-oriented seating position behind the aggressively cranked handlebars, which is good for racing but less for touring. The same applies to the tight chassis set-up.

Data
Four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1043 cm³, 101.5 kW (138 PS) at 9600 rpm, 110 Nm at 7800 rpm, tires 120/70 ZR 17; 190/50 ZR 17, seat height * 815 mm, tank capacity 15.0 liters, price 11,295 euros without additional costs.

Ducati Multistrada 1200 S..

It was exactly one year ago that the Multistrada took part in the endurance test, with 23,300 kilometers in between and much praise for Ducati’s completely new approach in this class. Above all, the powerful, gripping engine is what determines the character of the Italian. Turn the tap once in first gear – and whoosh, the Multistrada (with DTC switched off) goes to the rear wheel. In addition, the chassis can be adjusted between city and sport at the push of a button, the seating position is comfortable after a short period of familiarization, and the wind protection is good. If it weren’t for the sloppy and difficult-to-attach suitcases and the cumbersome keyless-go system with a constantly warning battery indicator – there would be almost nothing to complain about. So far, the Multistrada has used a total of four sets of tires, a new key battery and an exhaust clamp.

Data
Two-cylinder four-stroke 90-degree V-engine, 1198 cm³, 108.8 kW (148 PS) at 9250 / min, 119 Nm at 7500 / min, tires 120/70 ZR 17; 190/55 ZR 17, seat height * 840 mm, tank capacity / reserve 20.0 / 4.0 liters, price ** 18695 euros without additional costs.

Aprilia RSV4 R.

There is no space to keep a list of all previous defects of the RSV4 R at this point, so please refer to the interim endurance test in MOTORRAD 21/2011. In any case, there was a lot that broke during the previous year and a half and was replaced (sometimes several times). But now, finally, the beautiful super athlete seems to be in good shape and willing to bring the rest to a good end with dignity. That would be nice, because the qualities of the V4 racer are quickly described. It’s the fascinating, independent drive, and it’s a chassis that is unparalleled even in this high-performance league. Super handy, neutral and stable, the RSV4 sweeps through all kinds of radii, but also with the required sporty hardness and with a seating position that quickly becomes too strenuous for youngsters to ride upright. It is therefore just as exotic on this autumn trip as it is on all kinds of holiday tours.

Data
