Comparative test of impregnating agents

11 impregnating agents tested
Sprays against moisture and dirt

We have tested, evaluated and compared eleven impregnating agents. Specifically, it is about impregnation sprays, since we are from “Wash-in impregnators” hold absolutely nothing. Why? We explain that in the review.

First of all: A Gore-Tex combination also needs to be impregnated from time to time. Because every climate membrane reaches its limits when it hangs behind a wet and dirty barricade. (Re) impregnation is therefore important – and not only for outerwear, gloves and boots, but also for backpacks and tents.

2nd place: Motorex Protex Spray

Top values and thus full points for protection against moisture and dirt, because the points left behind in the absence of residues can easily be overcome. In addition, the Swiss product – at least by Motorex standards – is also relatively cheap.

4th place: W5 outdoor impregnation spray (best purchase)

The Lidl house brand and special offer only missed the test rating “good” by a measly point. But the moisture protection at the discounted low price is right – a clear buying tip!

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

5th place: Impragnol universal impregnation spray (purchase tip)

A “only” satisfactory judgment and still a “purchase tip” – how does that work? Because solid moisture protection is offered for little money. There is something wrong with the protection against (oil) dirt, but the absence of residues is good.

Proper moisture protection, but practically no protection against (oil) dirt, and also quite expensive – there is nothing more than “satisfactory”.

Dirt repellency: none of four oils passed

Residue-free: Inadequate on Cordura, sufficient on leather

Solid impregnation performance on Cordura, but major weaknesses on the more sensitive polyacrylate. Mediocre in terms of residue-free, but very cheap. The bottom line is that the Muller house brand ends up in the lower midfield.

8th place: Bikecare Waterproof

A mixed performance. The Polo house-brand product keeps water off satisfactorily, but weakens in the case of (oil) contamination. Commendable: the absence of residues.

Dirt repellency: none of four oils passed

Residue-free: very good on Cordura, good on leather

9th place: Nikwax TX Direct Spray-On

Disappointing impregnation performance, only unsatisfactory residue-free, but an ambitious price for it – sorry, that was nothing!

Dirt repellency: none of four oils passed

Residue-free: Inadequate on Cordura, sufficient on leather

MOTORRAD judgment: poor

10th place: Centralin All Spray Impregnator

Not convincing on Cordura, extremely weak on polyacrylate – there are very few points for the impregnation performance. No residue and protection from dirt? Even only moderately. The price doesn’t help either.

Spray test Cordura: ten passes (average value 76 points), on polyacrylate one pass (50 points)
Dirt repellency: passed one of four oils

Residue-free: Satisfactory on Cordura, poor on leather

MOTORRAD judgment: poor

11th place: Erdal Xtreme impregnation foam spray

The foam spray is easy to use, but fails completely in the impregnation tests in terms of moisture protection. Maybe just for leather shoes? Who knows, there’s only the red lantern here.
