Eleven rain suits in the upper price range want to show that they are worth their money not only in the shower, but also in extensive driving and wet tests.

There is no such thing as bad weather, at most the wrong clothing is an old motorcyclist saying. Of course, this helps not least in the rain. In recent years, more and more driver’s suits that are clearly superior to leather suits in terms of waterproofness have conquered the market, but the best protection in heavy rainfall is still offered by the good old rain suits, even if they only serve as a supplement. The question still arises as to whether one of the bargain offers for less than 50 marks is worth it or whether it is worth buying a high-priced station wagon. MOTORRAD took a closer look at eleven candidates in the price range 129 to 169 marks in order to clarify this question.
The more elaborate workmanship of the rain covers is already apparent at first glance. They are much more colorful than the cheap offers (see also test rain suits up to 50 marks in MOTORRAD 8/1997). In order to permanently protect the entire seams from penetrating moisture, they are also taped (welded) from the inside on all models. The more elaborate design can also be seen in the front zipper, which runs diagonally on all of them and is supposed to make it easier to get on – but this does not always work in practice, especially if you accidentally hit the wrong leg.
Other qualitatively outstanding features include complete or partial inner lining (with the exception of the completely unlined suits from Dainese and Frank Thomas) as well as zips and Velcro straps on the cuffs and legs. Cheap suits only have elastic bands or plastic press studs that are not very durable. But there are also differences in the upper price range. Frank Thomas preferably two Velcro straps on the legs, which can thereby be closed at least sufficiently tight. Amazingly, six participants (Difi, Harro, Orina, Reusch, Schuh and Uvex) do without the all-important Velcro straps on their cuffs. The existing elastic bands do not adapt adequately, wear out quickly and tend to slide up while driving.
And that brings us to the driving tests. With all station wagons it went on the Autobahn for the flutter test. On a 20-kilometer test track, the speed was gradually increased from 100 to 180 km / h and the candidates were extensively exposed to the wind on the undisguised Yamaha XJR 1200. It quickly became apparent that most station wagons are cut way too wide and begin to flutter hopelessly. With models that only have elastic bands on the arm cuffs, this inevitably leads – as already indicated – to sliding up. Even tightly cut leg lengths often slide up the crucial centimeters over the boot shaft. And then it is easy for rainwater to fill the treads.
In a ten-minute cloudburst simulated with a high-pressure cleaner, MOTORRAD determined whether and where the station wagons let water through. Peter Badtmann, a proven MOTORRAD employee for moisture tests (see, for example, waterproof textile jackets in MOTORRAD 6/1999), peeled himself into the station wagons one after the other, sat on the XJR, smoothed out all the water-collecting folds on the diagonal zipper and had a good shower. Several filled rubber boots and wet T-shirts later he had survived it.
The results are sobering. Almost all rain suits show slight water ingress in the crotch area. Responsible for this are the diagonal zippers, which run almost horizontally at the transition from the stomach to the thigh when the motorcycle is sitting in a normal position and thus give water a chance to easily penetrate. Test man Peter only stayed absolutely dry in the overcoats from Difi and Ixs.
Due to slight processing weaknesses, the Difi-Kombi is only sufficient for one “recommended”. The inner lining in the crotch and the corduroy on the collar tore after just two uses. In addition, the legs that were too short and the inner lining in the legs, which was extremely annoying when being put on, were negative.
Speaking of attracting attention: almost all candidates are equipped with reflective stripes, emblems or other conspicuous features so that other road users can see the rain suit carrier better in poor visibility conditions.
Conclusion: Even the expensive rain suits can’t do more than hold tight. And even this most important function they do not always fulfill to the full satisfaction. Nevertheless, due to the high quality workmanship and thus usually much longer durability than cheap combinations, they are always worth considering. Even if it is only to provide an additional warmth cushion in the cool transition period thanks to its thin inner lining.
