Supermotos from Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, KTM and Yamaha
Lean angle, cornering speed and lap times

No question about it: Supermoto machines maximize the motorcycling experience. But which concept is good for great fun on bends? MOTORRAD has measured: lean angle, cornering speed and lap times.

Max von Lippe smiles hard, holds out his hand in greeting. Understandable when you face a world champion for the first time in your life, and a two-time one at that. Supermoto champion Bernd Hiemer seems to be making a big impression on the young intern in the MOTORRAD editorial team. Would the 20-year-old have said yes to this ambitious plan with such enthusiasm at that moment? About the idea of illuminating the whole range of current Supermoto concepts on completely different routes among even more different drivers.

Lean angle, cornering speed and lap times. Our drivers test everything.

From the Winz-Drifter Yamaha WR 250 X to the KTM 690 SMC (654 cm3) to the various types of the two-cylinder group: Aprilia Dorsoduro (750 cm³), KTM 990 SM R (1000 cm³), Ducati Hypermotard (1079 cm³) and BMW HP2 Megamoto (1170 cm³). On country roads, on a supermoto circuit and in the city.

Controlled by professional Bernd Hiemer, MOTORRAD editor Peter Mayer in the role of the normal driver and Max von Lippe, who with just three months of motorcycle experience represents the dream cast of the committed amateur. So it’s a full program. No time to waste.

Even if the view from the panoramic road on the 1200 meter high Ballon dAlsace may be exciting. Our goal is 600 meters further down. Warm-up on the descent. It immediately becomes clear: This is exactly where the Supermoto League belongs.

The upright, front-wheel-oriented seating position, the wide handlebars and the tight knee joint create confidence straight away on the narrow, winding asphalt strip towards the valley. The first stopover after 15 minutes. The combination of curves directly below the Lac dAlfeld dam serve as a test track.

Landstasse – The Vosges

Little traffic, grippy asphalt and lots of curves, this combination makes motorcyclists prick up their ears. In the Vosges, the counterpart to the Black Forest on the left bank of the Rhine, this combination can be found in close proximity to Germany. The moderate altitude around 1000 meters (highest point: Grand Ballon, 1424 meters) also allows a relatively long motorcycle season. The Supermoto concept comparison was made on the slopes of the Ballon dAlsace in the southernmost part of the Vosges massif. A serpentine section directly below the Lac dAlfeld near Sewen was used for the country road measurements. Map: Maucher

Can cornering speeds and lean angles really be related to the type of motorcycle? Short answer: yes. Overall, the results of the test pilots in relation to a specific model are surprisingly uniform. However, maximum values do not mean everything on country roads. The end result was the result of the subjective assessment by the amateur and normal riders (Bernd Hiemer was not entitled to vote as a KTM works pilot), which also included the characteristics of the machines on the MOTORRAD test track.

The conditions on the racetrack are clear: what counts is the lap time, nothing else. The subjective evaluation of test criteria is not taken into account. The overall ranking results from the addition of the lap times that each of the test drivers achieved with the relevant model.

Whether cheeky bumbling between tin caravans or ice cream cafe posing, the rating for the city queen is undoubtedly the most subjective of all rankings. After all: low seat height (Ducati Hypermotard) and low weight (KTM 690 SMC, Yamaha WR 250 X) are in the Urban canyons are important and objectively measurable criteria. In addition, the look of these lifestyle bikes remains an important purchase criterion. By the way: KTM works driver Bernd Hiemer remains without voting rights because of bias.

MOTORCYCLE measurements

Concept comparison of supermotos

BILLION

Many worlds collide: It is in the nature of things that the performance curves and measured values differ drastically in such a wide-ranging comparison of concepts. How much mere measured values can hide the results in practice is demonstrated by by far the weakest machine in the test, the Yamaha WR 250 X. The bottom of the test bench and performance measurements was on the country road (page 18) and on the racetrack (Page 21) most of the three to four times stronger competition in the shadows. Also noticeable: the exceptionally high fuel consumption of the KTM 990 SM R, a flaw of many KTM two-cylinder models.
