Yesterday was the longest stage of this Dakar 2013 and the n ° 1 KTM driver, Cyril Despres, took the opportunity to strike a big blow: winner of the stage, he is now 2nd in the general classification behind his teammate Faria…

The Dakar riders had to cover no less than 852 km yesterday between Tucuman and Cordoba, including 593 km of special! Extremely long, traced on tracks that are both fast and demanding for the tires and the brakes, this ninth stage was expected – dreaded! – by all bikers

"When I go back to the bivouac, I will be able to mark this stage with a small red cross", Despres Himself pointed out at the end of the day! "I knew it was going to be physically complicated, that we shouldn’t let go".

Starting the same morning in 11th position (with 24’26 behind leader David Casteu, read it), Cyril had a flawless course: started like a ball, the KTM n ° 1 delayed in the middle of the course before to bring out the big attack at the end of the course.

"I have blisters on my feet, my hands are in pain", readily admits the four-time winner of the Dakar (31 stage victories with this one), "but you had to bang your fist on the table to say" Here I am! ". With Ruben, we have a good team race, he is in good shape and that is the main thing for the moment".

The Portuguese Ruben Faria is indeed at the head of the general and has a 5’23 lead over his teammate – and boss! – Cyril Despres now 2nd. The third in the provisional classification conceded only 16 minutes to Despres during this ninth stage despite a fall: it is Francisco Lopez on KTM also.

Other falls also marked this long day. The most decisive one was undoubtedly that of David Casteu, around km 120. While driving "quietly without forcing", the Yamaha rider n ° 10 hit a cow. …

"I was in the dust of Pedro Bianchi, when a cow came out in a bend," said the unfortunate pilot last night. "I hit it with the handlebars, and I fell hard on the shoulder. I also had my tank punctured, so I obviously ran out of gas. Vincent Guindani gave it to me, j managed to complete the first part "

Strapped in by the medical team ahead of the second special, David had to admit defeat 30 km from the finish when his Yamaha came to a halt: "I think that’s a sign. I stop. It’s not worth it, I wanted to fight in front ", he regrets bitterly.

"I have already experienced enough galleys in 2011 and 2012", justifies David Casteu unnecessarily before formalizing his decision: "Tomorrow I am going home. Morally it is very hard. One day, you cry with joy, and the next day you cry in pain and disappointment ".

Olivier Pain (also on Yam ‘) remains in the race but, victim of several falls, dropped nearly 32 minutes on this stage and lost two places overall. The n ° 9 nevertheless endorses the status of first Yamaha rider: he is 6th at 28 minutes from Faria.

The Husqvarna riders had a much better day than the Blues: despite a crash in the morning – so did he! -, the Spaniard Joan Barreda finished 2nd 4 ’03 behind Despres, and 1′ 11 ahead of his teammate Alessandro Botturi.

“I knew it would be a day to try something,” the Husky No.5 revealed on arrival, “I knew it was complicated – it was a lot of miles and a lot of hours. It was hard to keep up. maintain concentration for so long. In the end I got there ".

“I had a few scares,” Joan concedes, “because in the last part the tracks were slippery and the tires were totally smooth It became difficult to drive safely. But I managed to maintain a good rhythm until the end without making a mistake "

Botturi (Husky n ° 17) holds 5th place overall behind the four KTMs of Furia, Despres, Lopez and Jakes. The first Honda appears in 7th position: fifth in this marathon stage, the Portuguese Helder Rodriguez is 31 ’23 behind the leader.
