Because in front of them the horizon is leaden, the soft ground and the crossing of the famous (an immense salt desert formed on a temporarily dry lake in Bolivia) takes place in almost constant aqua-planning, with up to 15 cm thick accumulated water !

The motorcycles slip, fall, stall, start again as best they can to sometimes fall back a few meters further … At this "little game", the bodies are exhausted, morale gives way and the mechanics overheat due to the accumulation of salty mud. 

Faced with these dire conditions, the race management neutralized the race at km 378: after a long link of 368 km which brought them back to Chile, there would then be 38 km of special to compete in order to reach the Iquique bivouac. At this point, for some, this distance is equivalent to rallying the moon !

During the checkpoints, the bikers try to clean the vital organs (electrical circuits, cooling and intake, in particular) with water bottles. A system "D" often too insufficient.

Many of them will have to throw in the towel like Alessandro Botturi, Michael Metge, Daniel Gouet and Jordi Viladoms, four brilliant leaders of the Top 20.

But the worst disappointment is certainly that experienced by the official Honda team, whose leader Joan Barreda Bort has already experienced his after a fall from which he recovered with the broken left handlebars..  

Forced to repair alone due to the marathon status of the event, the Spaniard thought he was out of the woods after recovering the handlebars from the Argentinian Demian Guiral, another Honda rider.
