Dakar - Dakar moto 2015 - stage 8: Honda gets bogged down, Coma takes advantage -

The cold and the mud got the better of Honda’s lofty ambitions on the 2015 Dakar, depriving Joan Barreda Bort of his legitimate hopes of victory during the eighth stage between Bolivia and Chile. Cautious, Coma finished ninth in this incredibly trying stage and returned to the top of the standings.

The cold and the mud got the better of Honda’s lofty ambitions in the race, robbing Joan Barreda Bort of his legitimate hopes of victory in the eighth stage between Bolivia and Chile. Cautious, Coma finished ninth in this incredibly trying stage and returned to the top of the standings.

"A disaster for the entire Honda team"

Delayed due to rain, reduced visibility and cold (2 ° C), the start of the second part of the marathon stage (without technical assistance) took place with some trepidation….

For many, there is concern in the face of conditions that are necessarily made difficult with regard to the weather, but also questions related to the reliability of a mechanics revised oneself at the bivouac..

For others, the excitement of the early days has given way to an insidious but oh so legitimate form of anguish….

Because in front of them the horizon is leaden, the soft ground and the crossing of the famous (an immense salt desert formed on a temporarily dry lake in Bolivia) takes place in almost constant aqua-planning, with up to 15 cm thick accumulated water !

The motorcycles slip, fall, stall, start again as best they can to sometimes fall back a few meters further … At this "little game", the bodies are exhausted, morale gives way and the mechanics overheat due to the accumulation of salty mud.

Faced with these dire conditions, the race management neutralized the race at km 378: after a long link of 368 km which brought them back to Chile, there would then be 38 km of special to compete in order to reach the Iquique bivouac. At this point, for some, this distance is equivalent to rallying the moon !

During the checkpoints, the bikers try to clean the vital organs (electrical circuits, cooling and intake, in particular) with water bottles. A system "D" often too insufficient.

Many of them will have to throw in the towel like Alessandro Botturi, Michael Metge, Daniel Gouet and Jordi Viladoms, four brilliant leaders of the Top 20.

But the worst disappointment is certainly that experienced by the official Honda team, whose leader Joan Barreda Bort has already experienced his after a fall from which he recovered with the broken left handlebars..

Forced to repair alone due to the marathon status of the event, the Spaniard thought he was out of the woods after recovering the handlebars from the Argentinian Demian Guiral, another Honda rider. But luck has decided to turn its back on Barreda, whose 450 cc of his Honda is choking under the mud…

The lost seconds turn into minutes for the leader of the general, then squarely into hours: forced to be towed via a strap by his teammate Jeremias Israel, the HRC official arrives at the bivouac exhausted at 19:24, more than 3 hours after the first…

For Barreda, already betrayed by mechanics as he fought for victory, the disappointment is total, too much to be shared at the finish line…

"I can’t talk about it at the moment", he lets go with a blank stare before taking refuge in his motor home.

Almost as collapsed, his teammate Jeremias Israel recalls "a stage of m … Our motorcycles are not made for that. Joan’s was hit first, then mine too".

"Then we had to push to restart. And I pulled Joan, by the strap. For maybe 300 or 400 km, I don’t remember. We only took it off for the final descent (on the famous giant dune of Iquique, Editor’s note) ".

The interminable expedition also turned into a nightmare for Helder Rorigues, sixth in the stage the day before and in the provisional classification, who fell to 18th place overall. "It was a disaster for the whole team," said the Portuguese.

"She’s a great chick!"

The whole team ? In reality, no: the multiple trials champion Laia Sanz stunned everyone by rallying the finish of this extreme day in fifth place, 2’36 behind the winner. The smiling Spanish woman climbs up to ninth place in the provisional on her official Honda, thus bringing unexpected comfort to the HRC.

"This morning we were several pilots who did not want to leave because it was really very cold and it was dangerous", relates Lai..

"A lot of the bikes then had problems. Lucky for me everything went well and my bike worked well. I was third but unfortunately in the sand, at the end, Quintanilla and Price passed me because they are faster than me. But 5th is very, very good ".

Fast, courageous … and modest with that! Because for David Casteu, eleventh on the finish line on his KTM, the performance of the young Spanish is much more impressive than what she suggests..

"In the refueling, we were mostly old," said the French, eighth in the provisional. "Apart from one, who dropped us all off: on the Salar, she was leading the troop. She’s incredible, all the time there. She’s a hell of a bitch!", David Casteu said with admiration, speaking of the HRC pilot.

"Here we are doing the Dakar!"

Regarding the special and its difficulties, the Habs judge for his part that the organizer was right not to interrupt the stage, as some participants suggested in view of the extreme conditions..

"This is also the Dakar: you have to know how to manage yourself, the mechanics, the terrain, the climate … If it’s to ride the dunes around Iquique, you come with an enduro bike and you are going to have fun with the friends. Here we are doing the Dakar! "

"A week ago we were in Argentina, wondering how we were going to get out of this furnace at over 50 degrees, and this morning we were wondering if we were going to get by with our K-Ways and our dual-screen glasses ".

"It’s the toughest race in the world, I think he (Etienne Lavigne, race director, Editor’s note) was right to make this decision. There is a generation that is coming really strong, but today ‘hui we can see that the experience works ".

However, at the finish line, it was indeed less experienced drivers who won the first places. The Chilean Pablo Quintanilla (KTM) confirms his rise to power spotted last week by securing his first victory, after a fierce fight with Yamaha rider Juan Pedrero Garcia and Slovakian Stefan Svitko (KTM).

The excellent Australian rookie Toby Price completed the Top 4 ahead of Sanz (Honda), De Soultrait (Honda) and Duclos (Sherco). Having started cautiously, Marc Coma reached the finish line in ninth position, after also being delayed by an improvised cleaning of his KTM "by the bottle" during a checkpoint.

Thanks to the difficulties of his rivals Honda, the quadruple winner of the event however takes the lead of the provisional, with 9 minutes ahead of Helder Rodrigues and 11 minutes over the surprising Quintanilla..

"We had to find the best compromise between speed and caution to avoid problems," said the KTM official. "It’s the normal selection, there are things happening every day on the Dakar. We will try to avoid problems until the end".

"For the moment I am where I am, but we will see little by little. The important thing will be the last day", recalls the n ° 1 whose great experience suggests to him not to rejoice too quickly of this turnaround…

In the end, only 82 bikers will make it to the Iquique bivouac while they were still 110 in contention the day before during … Figures that say more than words about the difficulty of this 8th stage which will remain for a long time in the memories !
