Dakar - Dakar moto 2015 - stage 4: Barreda and Coma stand out -

By tracing his pace – and his trace – on that of Coma, Joan Barreda Bort took off his second stage victory ahead of the defending champion and the Chilean Pablo Quintanilla, brilliant third on his land. For a long time in the leading group, the French Alain Duclos finally finished 12 minutes after a navigation error.

The Dakar takes height

4800 meters. This is the altitude reached by the bikers to pass from Argentina to Chile during the 315 km timed of the 4th special of the Dakar 2015. Having started in front following his, the beginner Matthias Walkner quickly got tangled up with his brushes on this fast and demanding section in terms of navigation.

As he does, the former MX3 world champion lacks the experience to lead the way in the desert. And on an event as complicated as the Dakar, it pays cash: like Sunderland at the start of the event, Walkner got lost and finished the fourth day 23 minutes late..

Regarding Sam Sunderland, precisely, his situation – already complicated by his navigation error in the – heartbreaking turns after a heavy fall at km 67 … Raised with a broken collarbone, Marc Coma’s teammate at KTM is forced to retire, his third in three Dakar participations.

In the end, unsurprisingly, it was the favorites designated for the victory who set their pace during this special already taken last year. Joan Barreda Bort, leader of the general since the 2nd stage on the very competitive CRF Rally of the HRC, and Marc Coma who follows him in the provisional have adopted an exceptionally fast pace.

“I tried to go as fast as possible,” explains Coma. "I had to open the track very quickly. I did it in the end for the whole stage. The first part was quite hard. The last one involved a lot of changes of heading, of navigation. In fact it is in these situations where I am most comfortable when I am in the desert. I will keep this high pace, I will put speed to provoke the mistakes and the problems of others, hoping not to know any myself ".

Leader during most of the special, Coma was finally overwhelmed in the last kilometers by a calculating and ambitious Barreda, winner of the stage with a 1’59 lead over the official KTM.

"I am very happy", rejoices Barreda Bort, first in the provisional with 12’49 ahead of Coma.

"The first part of the stage was very fast, not at all easy. Marc (Coma, Editor’s note) was then in front. And it was very hard to join him. I remained very focused, and motivated ".

"I came back on him around kilometer 100. Then I was in the right rhythm. But we faced dunes and it was difficult in terms of navigation. With Marc we ended up together. So the strategy is good: we control ", explains the official HRC.

An excellent "blow" for Honda which can only count on Barreda for the moment since Goncalves is quite far from the expectations placed on him: the Portuguese is certainly in 3rd place in the provisional, but he is already 20 minutes behind.

Twelfth in this 4th stage, Goncalves also finished four places behind her teammate Lai Sanz, superb eighth at 13’48! Very good performance also signed by the Chilean Pablo Quintanilla, 3rd on the stage just 2’49 from Barreda.

Seventh in the stage and 9th overall, Alain Duclos, long in the right wagon on his Sherco, did not hide his disappointment and bitterness at the finish.

“At the front of the race, apart from Barreda and Coma, everyone got lost but not us,” explains the Frenchman. “I’m a little disgusted because I missed 8 kilometers from the finish, I started a kilometer too far to the right and the others came back. But that’s okay, it’s a good operation. feel good, not tired, the bike works very well ".

"Marc and Joan are above the rest, but they are human …"

"But in the Top 10, everyone is riding super hard," continues Duclos. "There are 5 or 6 of us to hold together in five minutes, which is not much on the scale of the rally. So we keep the pressure on the front group, and there is a point where things are fine. Let go. We have to admit that Marc and Joan are above the rest, they don’t make mistakes … we just have to congratulate them ".

If he sportingly recognizes the current superiority of his Spanish rivals, the Sherco driver nevertheless believes that Barreda and Coma are on the line.

"They are not immune to making mistakes: at the pace they are going, it is almost inevitable. Marc has already made mistakes, Barreda we do not even talk about it", tackles the French driver in reference to the small "hesitations" shown by the current Dakar leader in terms of navigation.
