Dakar moto 2016 – Finish: Price (KTM) in the legend
Toby Price won his first Dakar motorcycle at the age of 28 and became the first Australian rider to win the "King of rallies". The KTM official, at the head of the motorcycle category since the difficulties encountered by Gonçalves on his Honda, gave KTM its 15th consecutive success from his second participation in the…
"I am in shock…"
"I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what to think … I’m in shock, I never thought I would win this race for my second participation. For my family, for my friends and for my fans who support in Australia, it’s incredible! ", rejoiced the n ° 3, winner of this 38th edition of the Dakar after having won five stage victories ().
“Winning from my second participation is a hell of a record, but it’s also crazy to be the first Australian to win the Dakar. I was far from imagining that two years ago. To finish this event, c ‘is already a victory. To win it, it’s incredible. I approached the race with the attitude of an Australian ", explains the official KTM who endorsed without complex the status of boss left vacant following the withdrawal of Marc Coma.
"I attacked when I had to, when the time was right, and I was careful with the bike during the marathon stages which are very important. I also sailed quite well. I hope it didn’t. is just a start, that I will win others. It won’t be easy for all that, that‘s why I must appreciate this success ", confesses Price, fourth at the finish of this 13th and final stage..
Very fast, constant and at ease in the navigation parts, Price made no mistakes during the 9000 km of the rally which he won as a comfortable leader with 39’41 ahead of the Slovak Stefan Svitko (KTM) and 48’48 over the Chilean Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna), winner of this final stage between Villa Carlos Paz and Rosario (Argentina).
"This last stage was very difficult", explains Quintanilla, third overall, whose Husqvarna has the same mechanical base as the official KTMs. "There was a lot of tension before the start, a lot of nervousness. Today we played the whole race on this one stage. I started strong. And thanks to this day and to the work of the team we preserved the 3rd square".
Honda and Yamaha still pressed by the Orange armada…
Just behind Quintanilla, at just 1’41, Kevin Benavides stood out once again by taking the second place of the day in his CRF450 from the South America team. A rise in power rewarded with a 4th overall … and a consolation prize for Honda, which lost in quick succession its two leaders after the, then the pierced radiator followed by a .
Author of his first and only stage victory, Helder Rodrigues finished on the podium of this 13th day of racing, at 2’37. The Yamaha official closes the Top 5 of the general classification on his WR450F Rally, almost an hour (55’44) from Toby Price’s KTM.
Discreet, too discreet, the Yam ‘still lacked speed against the "steamroller" KTM, when the Honda again lacked reliability: in addition to the engine failure of Barreda, we also mention the big electronic problems encountered by the French Michael Metge , 11th overall while a Top 5 was within reach.
The rookie Van Beveren first French and second Yamaha rider !
Ninth of this 13th stage, the double winner of Le Touquet Adrien Van Beveren finished brilliant 6th in the general classification. The regular and fast Frenchman finished first tricolor biker and second Yamaha rider overall: not bad for a first participation in the Dakar !
Van Beveren tops his compatriot Antoine Meo on his official KTM, 7th overall while he occupied 3rd place before c on orders from KTM. Injured in the hand, the five-time world enduro champion painfully reached the finish of the stage in 70th place. However, it remains one of the revelations of this Dakar 2016.
Ninth last year on the Honda, the Spanish rider Lai Sanz took 15th place for her first season with KTM, while Olivier Pain finished 18th at 5’18.04. Heavily penalized by the theft of his helmet by a young spectator during, the French veteran Alain Duclos (44 years) rallies the arrival in 42nd place with his official Sherco, the heavy heart of having lost access to the Top 10 following this cruel mishap…
As for Sylvain Espinasse, the heroic and unique competitor on a 125cc 2-stroke, he finished penultimate (83rd) with the satisfaction of having taken his eighth-liter Husqvarna to the finish. A challenge when we know that the Auvergnat carried his oil blend in specially adapted pockets in his jacket (read) !
Finally, MNC also sends its congratulations to the former gifted motorcycle, Stephane Peterhensel, winner in the car category. The French driver equaled his Dakar record for two-wheeled success with 4-wheelers, with six victories for each discipline. Respect, "Monsieur Dakar" !
