Dakar moto 2017: report, declarations and classifications of stage 10
The tenth stage of the Dakar motorcycle 2017 will leave indelible marks on the physique of the bikers and their general classification. Joan Barreda (Honda) wins this extremely physical and complicated stage in terms of navigation, during which the second in the provisional Pablo Quintanilla withdrew.
Frenchman Michael Metge was the fastest in the tenth special, just 55 seconds ahead of his leader, Joan Barreda. On arrival, the Barreda water carrier was all smiles at having signed his stage in the Dakar for his 5th participation, after leading the second part of the special and taking the lead in the q…
Alas for Metge, his success will finally slip away under his nose after the race management inflicts one: the bad luck for Honda, already relegated far in the standings following his refueling not in accordance with the. Following the downgrading of Metge, Barreda recovers on the green carpet the victory of this long stage of 751 km including 449 km timed, disputed between Chilecito and San Juan (Argentina) in landscapes worthy of the American Far West !
"Bang Bang" Barreda can warmly thank his water carrier, because it was Metge who put him back on the right track after the winner of the previous stage was lost at km 40, like many others. other drivers (see video below). The other sensation of this very tricky day is the abandonment of Pablo Quintanilla: the official Husqvarna, second in the provisional, suffered from discomfort after falling and was evacuated by the medical team.
A very hard blow for the Chilean, very consistent from the start and who had high hopes after his fourth place last year. But the 31-year-old pilot had to resolve to throw in the towel after a hellish day, marked by heading errors and then a fall: disoriented and victim of a head trauma, Quintanilla said "stop".
Price, Quintanilla and Brabec "out"
This is the second retirement among the leaders after that of Toby Price in stage 4. Quintanilla will be joined a little later by Ricky Brabec: the Honda official was in the Top 3 of the special a few kilometers from the finish , when his CRF450 decided to let go. Unable to repair, at the end of his strength, the young American victorious finally had to be evacuated …
Did you say "difficult" this 10th stage ?! And to think that more than 30% of the stages were not contested following the cuts and the modifications of the course caused by the, at the origin of two victims and the transfer of several families …
Stefan Svitko (KTM), second in the Dakar last year, takes second place ahead of the astonishing Franco Caimi. The Slovak also did not have the easy part since he left for the hospital as soon as he arrived at the bivouac Thursday evening, victim of a big blow of fatigue. Hard on the skin, Svitko however got back on the handlebars early this morning to hunt for Barreda, who will open the track for the third time in this 39th edition..
With the victory of Ricky Brabec in the stage and the three successes of Barreda, Honda can boast of being tied with KTM on the number of days dominated: four each for the moment. Too bad that Barreda still points far in the provisional (5th at 53’47) following the error made by his team in stage 4 …
Overall, Sam Sunderland (KTM) retains the reins despite a delicate day yesterday, which finished a distant 12th place. The official Katoche gave up 17 minutes of his advantage to the general, which could have cost him dearly without the abandonment of Quintanilla. The Briton however maintains a lead of 30’01 over his teammate Matthias Walkner, propelled to second place ahead of Gerard Farres Guel (KTM).
The Spaniard stole provisional third place in the rally for three short minutes from the Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren (Yamaha), author of a bad operation during the 10th stage: the northerner also “gardened” copiously, just like Xavier de Soultrait, anonymous 22nd at the finish line 57’51 late.
The French viscount fell from 6th to 8th place in the provisional, behind his compatriot Pierre-Alexandre Renet on his Husqvarna (4th on the stage and 6th overall) and Paulo Goncalves on his Honda (8th on the stage and 7th on the general).
