Dakar moto 2018 – Stage 8: report, statements and classifications

Dakar - Dakar moto 2018 - Stage 8: report, declarations and classifications -

Antoine Meo (KTM) won on the 8th stage of the Dakar motorcycle 2018 after a superb duel with Honda official Ricky Brabec, second at 1’08! Adrien Van Beveren, 7th at 8’44 on his Yamaha, remains in the lead overall while his teammate Xavier de Soultrait is forced to retire due to injury. Debriefing.

All eyes were on Joan Barreda (Honda) at the start of this 8th stage, one of the longest of the 2018 Dakar motorcycle with 585 km to cover on the Bolivian heights. Much diminished by his, the HRC official still suffered from his painful knee, which he felt was broken after winning stage 7…

  • Dakar motorcycle –

Starting cautiously as an opener, "Bang Bang" was logically quickly caught up with the altitudes reached – 4800 meters! – strongly requested organizations. For the Spanish pilot, the challenge was all the more delicate as this stage was contested in a marathon format, without technical assistance at the bivouac..

Joan Barreda was therefore forced to maintain his CRF450 Rally on his own, with a loose knee: hats off! The Honda leader finally finished the day with the 8th fastest time 12 minutes behind the leader, a performance that allowed him to stay in the Top 5 overall..

Meo makes the pass of two

With Joan Barreda behind and Adrien Van Beveren in small form on this stage (7th at 8’44), the victory of the day was played between two "youngsters": Antoine Meo – on KTM – and Ricky Brabec on his Factory CRF. The gaps between the French and the American remained extremely tight all day, with only ten seconds at km 448 !

  • Dakar motorcycle –

Meo finally broke away in the last kilometers to score his second victory of the year with a 1’08 lead over Brabec and 2’45 over Toby Price, winner of the! KTM therefore remains firmly established at the forefront, despite the forced withdrawal of its leader Sam Sunderland, injured back following a poor reception..

Another star driver unfortunately has to forfeit injury: Frenchman Xavier de Soultrait, who occupied sixth place overall thanks to an excellent first part of the rally managed as a team with Adrien Van Beveren. The tile for the official Yamaha, who had intensely prepared by sleeping for a month in a pressurized tent to reproduce the altitude conditions !

"Last year, I had just got married so I hadn’t dared to inflict that on my wife, but this year I slept there every night so that my body got used to it", confided the French pilot, victim of ‘a big fall at km 171. Helicoptered to the hospital, Xavier de Soultrait suffered from a double elbow fracture and a sprained left knee.

Dakar - Dakar moto 2018 - Stage 8: report, declarations and classifications -

"Xavier put his elbow back on his own and tried to continue for 15 km, but the pain was insurmountable," said his wife Betty. "He was then evacuated by helicopter to Uyuni where the first diagnosis revealed a displaced double fracture of the elbow and a ruptured anterior and posterior ligaments of the knee. He is now repatriated to the hospital in La Paz where he will undergo examinations for know what it really is and where his brother is going to join him. He is obviously very disappointed, sad and he is in great pain "…

Xavier de Soultrait decidedly lacks success on the Dakar: after two very promising first editions, he had to give up due to engine failure in then in …

Van Beveren retains leadership

While the Dakar is in its second half, the gaps are still tight: Adrien Van Beveren narrowly retains the provisional leadership with just 22 small seconds ahead of Kevin Benavides, fourth in the eighth stage. The Argentine shines with his consistency, which makes him the main opponent of the Honda clan…

Dakar - Dakar moto 2018 - Stage 8: report, declarations and classifications -

“To sum up this stage: rain, mud, slippery roads! The Dakar in all its splendor, what!” Laughs Adrien Van Beveren at the finish, aware of the favorite label that is starting to be attributed to him. "The stage was long and required a lot of concentration. I’m still happy to have arrived, and the bike is always a treat to ride!"

KTM official Matthias Walkner, sixth on the stage ahead of "VBA", remains third overall with 6’34 behind Van Beveren. In other words, a tiny gap at this stage of the rally! The n ° 2 precedes his teammate Toby Price, Joan Barreda and Antoine Meo in the general.

For Pablo Quintanilla, on the other hand, the adventure took a wrong turn: the official Husqvarna fell at km 224 of this 8th stage and then spent an hour repairing his bike. The Chilean rider plunges to 12th overall, 1’25.23 behind Van Beveren: the victory will not be for the No. 10 on a regular basis…

Dakar - Dakar moto 2018 - Stage 8: report, declarations and classifications -

Quintanilla precedes the Gas Gas of Jonathan Barregan and the KTM of Lai Sanz, first rider in the classification at 1’31.25. The multiple trials world champion yesterday signed the ninth fastest time at the finish in Tupiza (Bolivia), her best performance since !

This result is all the more flattering for the KTM rider – above alongside Toby Price – as this stage was long, physical and very tricky due to the heavy rains. As in the previous year, this unstable and difficult weather forecast at altitude upsets the rest of the rally: the ninth stage scheduled for today is canceled !

Cancellation of the ninth step

"The difficult weather conditions, which have been raging for several days, do not allow the assistance teams, after a demanding marathon stage, to restore the racing vehicles to condition for tomorrow’s stage", explains the organizer.

Dakar - Dakar moto 2018 - Stage 8: report, declarations and classifications -

"All the Dakar vehicles will therefore join the Salta bivouac by a road route. The competition will resume with stage 10 between Salat and Belen", warns the ASO, which will give Joan Barreda an additional day of respite for heal his knee !
