Helder Rodrigues won his first Dakar 2016 victory on the penultimate day of racing between San Juan and Villa Carlos Paz, the longest stage with 900 km, including 481 km of special. A first also for the Yamaha WR450F Rally, so far behind against the KTM and Honda.

Rodrigues won with 4’32 ahead of the provisional leader, Toby Price, now almost guaranteed to win this 38th edition of the Dakar as the finish looms. Overall, the KTM official is now 37’39 ahead of his closest pursuer, the Slovak Stefan Svitko (KTM), and 53’10 over Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna).

Touched by hand, Meo finished the stage in slow motion in 21st position, 38 minutes behind the winner. The French went from 3rd to 6th place, probably doubly disappointed to have received team instructions…

Disappointment also for the tricolor Alain Duclos, victim of an incredible mishap: the official Sherco had his helmet stolen at km 292, following a small fall on a very steep area! After his cabriole, Alain Duclos put down his helmet the time to check that his motorcycle was ready to set off again…

"Then a teenager appeared out of nowhere grabs the helmet and runs off," said his team. "Reached by phone, we go back to him and give him a new helmet, mandatory to be able to resume the race". The n ° 20 finishes the stage in last place (84th), all his hopes of appearing in the final top 10 definitely lost…

"It’s just surreal, I didn’t expect to experience that one day," regrets the Frenchman, who has fallen to 43rd place in the provisional. "So far I was fine and I could see that this stage could mean something to me. It’s just amazing."…

Also note the 79th stage of Sylvain Espinasse on his 125cc 2-stroke Husqvarna, on the way to completing his. The courageous Auvergne is 83rd and penultimate in the provisional.
