BMW R 1200 GS (2017)
New technology, new style
Two new style packages for the optics, rally and exclusive, as well as technical innovations against the droning in the drive train and the loud gear shift noises – this is what the BMW R 1200 GS brings with it from model year 2017.
Rallye and Exclusive are the names of the new style packages for BMW R. 1200 GS from model year 2017 – Exclusive more for the road and rally for the enduro paint. The rally style package could be of particular interest to those who have been flirting with the more off-road look of the GS Adventure for a long time, but have not dared to go for the tall stilted GS because of the sheer seat height.
The designation "style package" reveals that it is not primarily a question of turning the BMW R 1200 GS into an off-road machine that can be used fully off-road. Nevertheless, optimizations for the terrain are possible, for example with the optional knobby tires or the optional sports suspension (only in connection with Dynamic ESA "Next Generation") with a harder spring, longer suspension struts and travel. This means 20 millimeters more ground clearance. Then you have the fear of heights again, like in Adventure, you ask? I agree. The sports suspension is more for tall and / or heavy pilots without fear of heights, but with off-road ambitions, but without using the 30 liter tank of the 1200 GS Adventure. The basic GS continues to come with the 20 liter tank.
New designs are impressive
Back to the optics: the rally package includes rally seat, sports windshield, radiator and frame protection and wide enduro footrests. In this variant, the BMW R 1200 GS also comes in "Lupine Blue Metallic", with painted decorations on the tank side panels in the BMW motorsport colors and a "cordoba blue" frame.
With the Exclusive style package, the new BMW R 1200 GS rolls in "Monolith metallic matt" held tank side panels with clearly varnished decorations. There is also the front wheel splash guard, tank cover in "Iced Chocolate metallic" and the matt-coated frame in "Agate gray metallic". In the wild, the GSs with the rally or exclusive package can both be recognized by the black drivetrain and the gold-painted brake calipers.

The differences to the predecessor?
To distinguish a basic BMW R 1200 GS model year 2017 from a 2016 GS, you have to take a closer look. For example on the side panel on which the logo and lettering sit. Or the prongs of the front wheel cover. Now we come to the technical innovations, which are primarily devoted to the loud switching noises and the roar in pushing mode.
The 2017 GS gets the torsion damper from the Adventure, a revised shift drum mechanism and new gear shafts including bearings. Test editor Peter Mayer writes in MOTORRAD, issue 23/2016 (since October 28th at the kiosk) about the driving impressions of a 2017 model of the BMW R 1200 GS: “The comparatively hard shift feel of the previous model is noticeably softer in the 2017 version. The switching shocks have not completely disappeared, but have been reduced to a tolerable, inconspicuous level. (…) The pacification can also be attributed to the torsion damper. The spring-loaded part now also does a good job in the basic GS, eliminating the droning there too to a level that is also tolerable. "
The highlights of the new BMW R 1200 GS at a glance:
- Boxer engine with new catalytic converter and modified data according to EU-4 requirements and an unchanged output of 92 kW (125 PS) at 7,750 rpm

- Spread of the model variety from the basic variant to Exclusive to Rallye
- new variant R 1200 GS Rallye with rally seat, sports windshield, radiator and frame protection, wide enduro footrests and cross-spoke wheels as well as optional sports suspension and optional studded tires
- Dynamic ESA of the latest generation with automatic damping mode and automatic driving position compensation (spring preload is set over the entire range in such a way that the lowering of the motorcycle resulting, for example, from a higher rider weight is compensated by more spring preload )
- Pro riding modes with DTC, Hill Start Control and the new customizable Dynamic Pro and Enduro Pro modes as factory-fitted options
- New special accessories such as cylinder protection bars, top cases for two helmets and off-road protection parts such as radiator protection and frame protection
Prices and launch
So far, the entry-level R 1200 GS started at 14,950 euros. The new BMW R 1200 GS will be available at dealerships from March and costs from 15,150 euros.
