The small trail Honda CRF250L takes advantage of its transition to Euro4 standards to progress slightly mechanically, but also practical thanks to a disconnectable ABS and richer instrumentation. A new CRF250 Rally reinforces the discreet career of this needy adventurer (and vice versa) !

Look no further: aesthetically, the is identical to the original version launched – and – in 2012, with the exception of cosmetic details like the guards of the Showa fork – not adjustable – now in red. The more observant will also note the inscription "CRF" henceforth inscribed in large letters on the sides. That’s all ? Yes !

The developments are mainly concentrated around the upgrading of the 249.4 cc 4-valve single-cylinder, water-cooled. For this purpose, it receives a new injection and a larger diameter intake duct (38 mm against 36), favoring a more direct air intake from the filter. This better aspiration benefits the mechanical efficiency, up from 23 hp to 24.7 hp and 22 Nm to 22.6 Nm. !

The exhaust also evolves with a catalyst and two plenum chambers to promote pollution control. Good news: despite its larger manifold – also the source of the performance gain – it would be "450 g" lighter. Bad news, however: this benefit on the scale is eclipsed by the introduction of an ABS, also disconnectable at the rear to skid off-road. With the addition of this mandatory device in 2017, the CRF 250 L even takes 2 kg: from 144 kg at its release to 146 kg for this second generation.

We console ourselves with the arrival of a new, more complete digital instrumentation including a counter, a tachometer, a fuel gauge and a watch. The simple steel cradle type frame can be reassembled as it is on a (the reverse is also true!), Just like the suspension generous 250mm front and 240mm rear travel, the frail 2-piston front caliper and 21- and 18-inch wire wheels.

In short, no big upheavals for this motorcycle with a career as sober as its gasoline consumption, of the order of "3 l / 100 km" according to Honda. Or a range of some 260 theoretical km with the 7.8 liters of the tank: enough to see coming, even in the open countryside! Recall that in 2012, the sales targets in France were only "200 registrations", the French subsidiary being well aware of the lack of appeal of the 250 cc on its market.. …

In an attempt to boost its trail 250 offer, Honda is therefore offering a new version that embellishes rally-raid based on this CRF 250 L: the CRF 250 Rally. The style of this novelty is similar to the motorcycle engaged – among others – in the Dakar, the CRF450 Rally. In addition to this evocative look and the use of the unique HRC color, the protection benefits advantageously from this transformation via the grafting of a fairly large windshield and scoops, as well as practical handguards..

The single-cylinder, strictly identical to that of the CRF250L above, is camouflaged behind a covering which includes an enveloping plastic shoe. Among the differences, let us quote again the use of a front LED optics (technology also used at the rear and on the indicators), whose asymmetrical profile gives a funny look to this CRF250 Rally. The capacity of the tank goes from 7.8 to 10.1 liters, in favor of autonomy: the course of 320 km is now accessible, assures the manufacturer! The frame, brakes and other components – like the disconnectable ABS at the rear and the new screen – are identical to those of the CRF 250 L 2017.

The mono-shock absorber gains in travel (from 250 to 265 mm) and its calibration has been revised – like that of the inverted 43 mm fork – to adapt to possible off-road outings. These new settings no doubt also take into account the significant increase in weight, which goes from 146 kg on the CRF 250 L to 157 kg on the CRF 250 Rally. These additional 11 kg will not favor the relaunching of the single cylinder of barely 25 hp, unchanged from the CRF 250 L. Escape, why not … but not two, loaded motorbike, attacking ‘a mountain pass or a sandy track !
