BMW R 1250 RT (model year 2019)

Travel boxer with more displacement and more power

The new tourer BMW R 1250 RT will be at INTERMOT in Cologne. Like the new GS, the RT will get the boxer with variable inlet control in the 2019 model year. Already in October it will be on the market at a base price of 18,000 euros.

The BMW appears visually and also from the overall concept R. 1250 RT unchanged. It remains with the large fairing with adjustable window and the integrated suitcases at the rear. The new year can only be recognized by the new cylinder heads and the changed manifold guides. Both of these point to the most striking change to the RT – the engine.

Boxer with variable inlet control

The latest model offensive by Bavaria shows that the boxer engine concept has not yet been exhausted. As in the new BMW R 1250 GS, the boxer in the new R 1250 RT also has a variable intake control under its cylinder heads, which should give the two-cylinder more power, more torque, but also better exhaust gas values and improved smoothness.

BMW calls the system ShiftCam and thus varies the valve timing and valve lift on the intake side depending on the load and engine speed through an axial shift in two stages. This takes place via a shift gate and an electromechanical actuator. In addition, the intake camshafts were designed in such a way that the two intake valves open asynchronously, which should lead to an increased swirl of the incoming fresh gas and thus to more effective combustion. The camshaft drive was converted from roller chains to tooth chains. The new boxer has increased its displacement. 3 mm more stroke and 1.5 mm more bore result in a displacement increase from 84 to 1,254 cm³

In total, this results in 136 hp for the new boxer at 7,750 rpm and 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm. In addition, the boxer should now provide noticeably more power in the lower speed range. 110 Nm should be available from 2,000 rpm, and a whopping 120 Nm from 3,500 rpm. The power pack is combined with a revised six-speed gearbox and an anti-hopping clutch.

More equipment and new options

To adapt to the individual driver’s wishes, RT pilots are now available as standard with two driving modes. The automatic stability control, ABS Pro and the hill start assistant are also standard. Other driving modes are available at an additional cost. The ESA chassis with automatic load compensation is also new to the equipment option list.

The base of the RT is available in two colors, plus there are two style variants Sport and Elegance. Of course, the new BMW R 1250 RT can also be extensively customized. For example, the milled parts packages Option 719 Classic and HP are available. These include cylinder head covers, ignition coil cover, oil filler plug and front engine housing cover, clutch and brake levers and the expansion tank cover. The RT can also be upgraded with two different special wheels, other benches (90 mm height difference), special paintwork and an HP sport rear silencer.
