In December 2019, the German Federal Council decided that in future everyone in Germany may – under certain conditions – also be able to drive 125cc light motorcycles with their driver’s license. This regulation has been in effect since January 2020. Here we give you an overview of the requirements you have to meet, how much it costs and how successfully the new driving license regulation has already been accepted – and by whom.

Requirement for the driver’s license extension

The inclusion of the A1 driving license (125) in the car driving license is subject to conditions in this country – in contrast to Italy, for example:

  • Applicants must be at least 25 years old,
  • have had a class B driving license for at least five years
  • and there are nine 90-minute double lessons of driving school to complete – four in theory and five in practice.

125cc drive without a test

A driving test is not required after the training. A certificate from the driving school that confirms the relevant training is sufficient. With this you can have the code number 196 for class B registered within twelve months and can use it to drive light motorcycles and scooters. By definition, these have 125 cm³, a maximum of 11 kW (15 PS) and at full power must not be less than 110 kilos (maximum 0.1 kW / kg), tricycles up to 15 kW (20 PS). They can reach a top speed of more than 100 km / h.

How much does the extension of the car driver’s license cost?

The cost of adding the code 196 to the driver’s license varies depending on the driving school and region. Usually the costs are between 500 and 900 euros. The driving school then provides proof of training with which a new driver’s license must be applied for at the driver’s license office – don’t forget a new passport photo. For this item you have to calculate about 40 to 50 euros plus a waiting time for the official way.

How much does it cost to insure a 125cc?

The requirements for the B-196 driving license for light motorcycles and scooters already result in a savings effect on vehicle insurance. Unlike the 16-year-old A1 novice drivers, those over 25 with driving experience in a car represent a significantly lower risk for insurance companies. According to a comparative calculation by Allianz Versicherung, the cheapest liability insurance for a Honda CBR 125, for example, costs around 47 euros a year the most expensive about 70 euros. In the comparison it was assumed that the policyholder is the holder and has obtained his driver’s license in Germany. There is no garage for the 125cc (new vehicle), and an annual mileage of 10,000 kilometers is assumed for mostly private use. Prior insurance was in place for more than five years and the driver has no-claims class 13. No vehicle tax is levied on 125 cc models with no more than 11 kW (15 hp).

Opportunity to upgrade to a motorcycle license?

However, if you get a taste for it and want to switch to larger bikes, you have to do a motorcycle driver training from the bottom up. Because unlike the A1 driving license, which can be obtained at the age of 16, the B 196 does not allow a simplified upgrade to the A2 and A motorcycle driving licenses.

Can I drive it in Europe??

Unfortunately not. The right to drive class B 196 light motorcycles and scooters is restricted to Germany. You are not even allowed to drive it in Italy, where the (Italian) class B includes 125 cc without any restrictions. The reason for this: Because the EU states could not agree on a uniform regulation, each country has the national option of allowing light motorcycles and scooters with a car license to be driven.

Success of the new driving license regulation

The balance sheet from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows that the B196 license is in great demand. In the first year, 77,823 drivers took advantage of the opportunity to upgrade their driving license. And the new registrations of light motorcycles and light scooters also take this trend into account. The 125cc motorcycles were able to register an increase of 77.5 percent compared to the previous year in 2020, with the 125cc scooters it is even 107.6 percent more.

Most of the drivers who have extended their driving license for 125cc bikes in 2020 are registered by the KBA for the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg. Taking into account the population of these countries, the highest values ​​with more than 200 authorizations per 100,000 inhabitants were found in Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.

The interest in the changed access to the driving license to drive a light motorcycle has so far been more pronounced among men at 77 percent than among women (2020 as a whole). Most of the motorists who extended their driver’s license for the 125 motorcycles and scooters with the 196 certificate were on average between 45 and 60 years old. The classic new bikers are middle-aged men.

Conclusion

For drivers who have already flirted with motorcycling but have been put off by investing time and money, the 196 driver’s license extension is a wonderful way to get on a motorcycle. But commuters who are fed up with being stuck in traffic jams or want to avoid public transport are also happy about the pragmatic and inexpensive option of extending their driving license to 125 cc motorcycles and 125 cc scooters without a test.
