Driving report BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

If you have the new GS 1200 Adventure in full regalia, you think more of mountaineering than of motorcycling. It is the most powerful travel enduro that you can currently buy and climb.

Gall-terrain, stronger, lighter, more comfortable ?? With these words, press poets from BMW describe the qualities of the new GS Adventure. Their unique talents make them “100 percent suitable for traveling around the world right from the factory”. In German: Regardless of whether there is a high density of petrol stations in Australia, Central African branch lines or 1000 kilometers of motorway and weekend relationship? the enduro monster from Bavaria allegedly devours distances like our loving school sandwiches back then. Unfortunately, the world tour will initially only be a two-day trip around Lake Garda. But that’s enough to get a first impression.

Adventure’s watchword is “climb up”. Because with a seat height of 895 millimeters in the lowest notch on the two-way adjustable lookout, the first ascent actually turns out to be an adventure. Especially in connection with mounted suitcases you have to swing your leg wide and high when sitting up. Although the Bavarian Sitzwerkler have narrowed the two-part bench a little compared to the old Adventure, this only helps short-legged people to a limited extent. The fact is: If you want to drive the GS safely, you should firstly be athletic, secondly experienced and thirdly be tall.

And fourthly, have the necessary change. Even the base price of 13500 euros blows a decent crater into the wallet. It doesn’t even include an ABS or case system. If you order the full range, you get an amazing 19800 euros. And when refueling, it is reduced by another 41 euros, if he has actually run the 33-liter barrel dusty dry. So much for the financial requirements.

However, if all the hurdles have been overcome, you will receive the best long-distance travel machine that BMW has ever built. Even after the first few meters, you actually get the feeling of quitting your job and wanting to travel around the globe. The new screen, which is wider than the standard GS, provides excellent protection, the seating comfort is almost perfect, and the chassis reveals a litter-like character. It’s easy to forget that this mechanical world travel buddy is full-
when fueled it tows 292 kilograms on the scales. There are still 183 left for the payload. Stupid, of course, when you yourself wear a proper ring in the middle of your body and your pillion an exaggerated one
Has a weakness for chocolate. The luggage for the trip has to be correspondingly sparse.
And that would be a shame. Because this GS
offers the most stable luggage system in BMW history. Developed and manufactured by the accessories specialist Touratech, the two aluminum cases hold a total of 79 liters, the top case, which is available in the same look, a further 33. According to BMW, it is approved for a maximum of 180 km / h and a load of 25 kg. However, if you take a closer look at the screw connections, weld seams, the clever locking system or the snap locks, you get the impression that they can be used to transport boulders if necessary.
On the road it is still a miracle what agility the almost six hundred pound GS displays. Fold down in an inclined position? Give in? Abrupt change of direction? No problem for the enduro mountains. The huge tank is narrow in the leg area and almost hugs the driver, the wide butted aluminum handlebar lies wonderfully in the hand ?? steering made easy. In addition, the Michelin Anakee mounted on the test machine literally claw into the asphalt and offer good grip even in wet conditions. Off-road, however, there are limits. But the Adventure can already be delivered ex works with Conti’s TKC 80 coarse toller. It offers traction even in the sand and is approved for speeds of up to 160 km / h.
A speed that the one-to-one engine from the R 1200 GS shakes off its sleeve. 98 PS and a massive 115 Newton meters of torque torpedo the off-road bullet to almost 200 km / h and force it out of the bends. Just like in the GS 1200, the air / oil-cooled four-valve boxer turns cheekily and freely like never before. And if the sister is already a big hit, the Adventure goes one better: The split, foldable brake lever, the wide, toothed footrests, the sturdy crash bar and the suspension travel that has been extended by 20 millimeters further improve the off-road capability considerably. However, the latter also lead to greater movement in the chassis. 13 liters more tank volume increases the range with around five liters of country road consumption to a theoretical 660 kilometers, and long-distance comfort is optimized thanks to the ergonomic bench concept and the new windshield. So a lot of light and hardly any shadow?
Not quite. The Bavarians forgot a side cover for the rear wheel. The left foot is soaked in when it rains. In addition, one or the other might miss integrated carrying handles on the suitcases at a price of around 1600 euros for the complete luggage system. Real world travel gurus might want a brake without a brake booster to reduce their susceptibility. And miss the very short first gear, as it was still installed in the previous model, the R 1150 GS Adventure. These last few freaks are probably sitting in the low saddle of their elderly anyway
R 80 G / S. They should be persuaded to take a test drive. The new Adventure will be available from dealers from March 25th. Hopefully the ladder and crampons are right next to it.
