Driving report BMW R 1250 GS (2019)

More displacement and significantly more flavor

The new BMW R 1250 GS will be launched on the market this October. Base price: 16,150 euros. It comes with a new boxer, more power, more displacement and numerous new features. It celebrates its premiere at INTERMOT in Cologne. MOTORRAD was already allowed to drive.

The most striking change to the new BMW R. 1250 GS can be found in the cylinder heads of the boxer engine. Here the Bavarians rely on a variable inlet control, which should give the two-cylinder more power, more torque, but also better exhaust values and improved smoothness.

84 cm³ more displacement and 136 hp

The technology, called ShiftCam, varies the valve timing and the valve lift depending on the load and engine speed through an axial shift in two stages. This takes place via a shift gate and an electromechanical actuator. In addition, the intake camshafts were designed in such a way that the two intake valves open asynchronously, which should lead to an increased swirl of the incoming fresh gas and thus to more effective combustion. In addition, the camshaft drive was converted from a roller chain to a toothed chain. With 3 mm more stroke and 1.5 mm more bore, the displacement increases by 84 cm³ to now 1,254 cm³. In total, the measures result in the most powerful series boxer of all time with 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm. In addition, the boxer should now provide noticeably more power in the lower speed range. 110 Nm should be available from 2,000 rpm, and a whopping 120 Nm from 3,500 rpm. The power pack is combined with a revised six-speed gearbox and an anti-hopping clutch.

Driving impressions of the first test drive

After pressing the starter button, the pilot does not notice much of all the new technology under the valve covers. Only the background noise when stationary has changed a little, appears finer and quieter. Probably a consequence of the inverted tooth chain, which drives the camshafts instead of the roller chain previously used.

As smooth and strong as never before: The new engine has noticeably more pressure.

Gear in. Departure. It is immediately noticeable that the boxer is noticeably smoother in the lower revs. 2,000, 1,500, even down to 1,000 revolutions, you can let the propellant sink without him shaking his massive ears as usual. It pulls out of the speed range as smoothly and smoothly as never before. And also stronger than ever. The new BMW R 1250 GS should take two seconds off its predecessor from 60 to 180 km / h. That’s believable. And noticeable. The Bayern boxer pushes out of the corners with force, pushing forward with significantly more flavor than before. Much more important, however, is that the shift cam boxer does not show anything from the shift change in the camshaft drive, as was clearly noticeable, for example, in the VTEC engines of the Honda VFR. Absolutely nothing. Without the slightest break-in or surprising kick, the propellant continuously climbs up the speed ladder. Impressive.

But despite more bangs in the middle and in the upper speed range, the improved running smoothness in the lower speed range ultimately dominates the appearance of the new boxer. You gear up intuitively earlier, usually between 3,000 and 4,500 rpm, and enjoy the good training of the engine.

And also the rest of the new BMW R 1250 GS. Even if hardly anything has changed, the Dynamic ESA is convincing, as it automatically detects the load status as well as the dresser seating position, the powerful brakes or the stable chassis. And if you get used to the still somewhat indifferent Telelever front after a few kilometers, you can turn your emotions fully back to the engine. The new one really deserves to be noticed.

Extended standard equipment

The switch cam boxer can be recognized by the new covers.

Also standard on board the new BMW R 1250 GS are two driving modes, an automatic stability program and hill start assist. Driving modes Pro with additional driving modes, dynamic traction control, ABS Pro, Hill Start Control Pro and the dynamic brake assistant DBC are optional. The HP-Style version of the R 1250 GS can also be upgraded with a sports suspension with longer suspension travel for an additional charge.

Standard with the new BMW R 1250 GS is its LED headlights, LED daytime running lights cost an extra charge. And if you have already made a cross, you can also choose between different benches that vary the seat height from 800 to 900 mm. The 6.5-inch color TFT display with connectivity functions is already included in the basic price.

GS stays true to its line

Bmw

The appearance of the new BMW R 1250 GS hardly differs from its predecessor.

GS fans hardly have to get used to the look. The boxer is new, but changes almost nothing in the GS line. Only the new valve covers and the slightly modified pipe routing of the manifold are visible. It is sharpened mainly by the two new colors Cosmic Blue metallic and Black Storm metallic in the basic variant as well as the Exclusive and HP style variants. Oh yes, the telescopic tubes are now “gold". Exclusive relies on numerous black add-on parts in combination with stainless steel elements and golden brake calipers. The HP version of the BMW R 1250 GS exudes off-road competence mainly through a white / red / blue color combination, the rally seat and gold-colored wire-spoke wheels.

BMW R 1250 GS from 16,150 euros

The new BMW R 1250 GS can be extensively customized.

Of course, the new BMW R 1250 GS can also be extensively customized from the accessories catalog. We want to name the two milled part packages Classic and HP. These include cylinder head covers, ignition coil covers, oil filler plug and engine housing cover at the front, clutch and brake levers as well as the expansion tank cover, the left and right footrests, the footbrake and gear lever and milled mirrors.

BMW mentions 16,150 euros as the base price for the new BMW R 1250 GS. The Classic and HP milled part packages are charged with an extra 2,500 euros each, the HP sports silencer costs 850 euros extra. The market launch of the new BMW R 1250 GS is scheduled for October 2018.
