Ducati’s entry-level supermoto

Content of

…the hippie is back! Shortly before the big exhibition in Milan, Ducati presented the small Hypermotard 796. As a new entry-level model and inexpensive entry ticket to the world of red motorcycles from Bologna.

And then that! One painted red Hypermotard 796 costs 300 euros extra, costs 9295 euros instead of the tempting 8995 euros for its black or white-black version! That is pretty cheeky and comparable to the Ryanair toilet fee scandal. This surcharge policy can only be topped by Daimler-Benz AG if they charge 100 euros for the star on the radiator grille.

But you don’t have to understand everything. Another question mark appears after the first few meters on the new, small Hypermotard. Why was the frame geometry and thus the peculiar, wobbly driving behavior taken over from the Hym 1100? A 66 degree steering head angle and 100 millimeter caster support the maneuverability of the dry street flea, which weighs only 167 kilograms, but does not exactly ensure confident and neutral driving behavior. So the little hip reacts very sensitively to bumps and faults in an inclined position, stands up and falls back into it. The non-adjustable fork responds well and works comfortably, but is tuned too softly, which forces it to its limit on bumps and especially when braking, and thus to block. The Sachs strut on the hindquarters acts much tighter, which leads to a less than harmonious overall impression of the suspension setup. In addition, there is an upright moment when braking in an inclined position, which makes it even more difficult to brake deeply in curves. The front stoppers, on the other hand, work flawlessly – the small Hypermotard is always easy to use. There are also positive things to say about the 803 cubic 796 twin.

Built on a new, lighter crankcase, the air cooler pulls off nicely from 4000 rpm and adds a few more horses at 6500 tours. The gearbox of the just 400-kilometer-old Hym could be shifted resinously, but that can still go away with higher mileage. Do not lie down, the seat cushion does just that. The seat height, which is 825 millimeters, is 20 millimeters (Hym 1100: 845 mm) lower, thanks to a thinner bench. Unfortunately it sits through quickly, the seat meat hurts after just 140 kilometers.

But Ducati proudly attests the Hym 796 to have the lowest standard consumption in the model range, even before the Monster 696. 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers – that’s something.

CONCLUSION

The joyful hyp hyp hurray is followed by a disillusioned hip hip well. The hip Hypermotard 796 is supposed to be an entry-level bike, but it has an idiosyncratic driving behavior. The price is just about right for an entry-level Ducati, but the surcharge for the brand-typical red paint job is simply bold.
