Driving report Honda VT 750 Shadow Spirit

Fine spirit

E.As is so often the case in life: it depends on the subtleties. The Spirit, based on the Shadow 750, which is still available, is about the spirit in the machine. So just casually kicked the V2. As is typical for the brand, it spreads its cylinders at a 52-degree angle, and has three valves in each head. In contrast to the standard Shadow, an injection mixes up the old engine in the Spirit. This enables regulated catalytic converters in the two »dual-shotgun« silencers.

In terms of sound, the 750 really doesn’t have to hide. The V-Zwo develops its power extremely evenly and gives a pleasantly dull squawk. A real soul masseur. Despite the modest 44 hp, you don’t feel underpowered. That fits, including the somewhat jagged gearbox and clean cardan drive, for exploring the surrounding area.

Spiritual: Despite measuring 248 kilograms, the Spirit looks airy and light. There are no lighter long forks anywhere. In addition, there is the confidence-inspiring seat height of just 66 centimeters. The one-piece seating is Janus-headed: a comfortable, huge saddle for the driver at the front, a fakir cushion for the passenger at the back. Tiny, short, sloping backwards so that the passenger is always in danger of being thrown. So it’s better to go alone.

The Honda is long, flat and narrow. A real chopper. The stylish, huge 21-inch front wheel goes well with it. No less than 52 glittering wire spokes hold the chrome-plated 2.15-inch steel rim. The front tire, a Dunlop D 404 F, could still make a career as a cutting disc with a width of 90 millimeters. Aft then exactly the contrast program. A respectable 160 tire on a tiny 15-inch rim. Because the spirit counts.

Low-reaction cardan on a long swing arm meets overburdened struts.

In the long run you sit pretty much on your rump. While the soft fork primarily makes for comfort, the two ultra-short suspension struts are overly flexible. They sink in deep and even go up to the block with small bumps. To then snap out again almost undamped. Ouch.

The Spirit rocks itself up on bad terrain, only lies quietly on smooth roads until the speedometer display 170. But for a flat iron it can be shooed around corners surprisingly neutral, handy and precisely. Typically Honda, just well balanced. The Spirit doesn’t fold in by itself, it even offers passable lean angles. OK then! The simplest of brakes, drum at the rear, single disc with double-piston floating caliper at the front, make the tires whistle easily.
7660 euros seem quite fair in view of the refreshed technology and some nice details. Uncool: protection »sheet metal«, lamp and blinker made of disdainful plastic. Because the spirit counts.
