Driving report KTM 690
Big Bang: Supermoto Prestige
That was the really big hit in 1987: KTM brings a revolutionary, light four-stroke engine for off-road use, the 600 LC4. Lighter, stronger, more brutal than all Japan singles. A new world then, twenty years ago. And it was exactly this engine from yesteryear that drove the entire LC4 range to this day ?? admittedly, with various interventions, such as the poorly tinkered balance shaft in 1995. No wonder that buyers have stopped bothering about it recently.
In addition, other segments really got off the ground during these twenty years. A super sports grenade like the Suzuki GSX-R 750, for example, increased from 100 hp to a nominal 150 hp, which corresponds to an insane 200 hp per liter. In contrast, large single cylinders still bob around with a limp 50 hp. From more than 600 cm³, which consequently corresponds to just 85 hp per liter.
So there still seems to be untapped potential that KTM would like to use in the 690 Supermoto, whose drive unit is still called the LC4. After all, the new KTM engine is the first completely redesigned single-cylinder since the Rotax drive of the BMW F 650 GS from 1994, apart from highly specialized off-road engines and small series designs. Light, compact, with the latest cylinder head configuration, six-speed gearbox and central balancer shaft. Injection is mandatory anyway, as is modern exhaust gas cleaning.
The central question, however, remains how much power can be tickled out of such a modern single cylinder. In view of the tougher conditions; Large-volume individual cubicles suffer particularly from the strict emission regulations. So the new single remains a respectable piece away from the supersport level of performance. The Austrians proclaim 63 hp, 54 hp in the previous 640. For the promised 63 hp, the KTM technicians had to pull out all the stops so that the large single cylinder can legally comply with the applicable regulations without any trickery. By the way: A 690 is no more the youngest engine than its predecessor was a 640. 654 cm³ is the correct displacement, 29 cm³ more than before.
First push on the button: The 690 hisses to itself with initially slightly increased idle speed when stationary. No choke, no minute-long regulation of the idle speed with the throttle, just a modern injection with lambda control. However, not much more than hot air comes out of the mighty sidepipes. While the Ducati 1098 still sounds really lively today with the exhaust flap, the KTM only has a gentle whisper of the full single-cylinder blow. At least hearty vibrations create a bit of a steam hammer feeling. Thanks to the reduced flywheel mass, the single-cam four-valve engine hangs spontaneously on the gas, which promises a lot of liveliness even when stationary.
On the way in the south of France, a magnificent pass beckons. The winding asphalt belt is ideal terrain for such a lightweight toy. The Supermoto weighs 163 kilograms with a full tank? not much, but also not less than its predecessor. In any case, it is a very compact motorcycle with an almost perfect arrangement. We know that from KTM: sit on it and feel good, everything fits, nothing bothers you.
Two things stand out on the first few kilometers. First: Nothing works below 3000 rpm, the KTM shakes like a doused poodle. The newly designed tachometer should report 3500 rpm even when rolling around comfortably. Second, the steering is extremely direct at first, almost a bit nervous.

690 Supermoto no doubt. But it is not the engine that gives the big kick, rather the stiff chassis amazes with unexpected qualities.
