Driving report KTM 950 R Super Enduro
Think big
The Erzberg: Millions of tons of iron ore, a grandiose scenery, carved in stone. The KTM 950 R Super Enduro: 100 hp concentrated power, a new dimension, crisp off-road outfit. Huge impressions in a double pack.
A landscape like on Mars, in the middle of Austria. A whole mountain is being removed here not far from Graz, dug for iron ore on the surface of the earth for several centuries. In the past by hand, today with gigantic equipment. This is how the Erzberg, an archaic rocky landscape in a mystical apocalyptic mood, emerged over time.
The right place to present a no less impressive, eight meter high and 50 ton heavy dump truck, but comparatively filigree earth machine: the KTM 950 R Super Enduro. After Adventure, Superduke and Supermoto, the fourth KTM motorcycle with the light, lively 75-degree V-twin cylinder. Their late appearance is astonishing, because the enduro should actually have earned the starting number one in the two-cylinder segment, as it corresponds exactly to the spirit of the company, namely the successful hardenduro concept.
To put it simply, the Super Enduro is one
Adventure with a small tank, yet it is an independent model with a completely different character. The stiff tubular space frame has remained largely unchanged, it supports the motor hanging below and encloses the huge airbox. A key-
nice concept, especially since the Adventure’s huge tank halves sit low next to the frame. The remaining models required compact accommodation
a reasonable tank volume, however, fantasy. In the case of the Supermoto, this resulted in a fairly wide tank-seat combination despite the reduced volume. As a result, the parts had to be redesigned for the off-road version because they were off-road
a slimmer waistline is essential. The tank of the Super Enduro
appears more filigree, but inevitably stores its 14.5 liters of fuel quite high above the frame. The cladding parts put on for lamination have the advantage that, unlike the Adventure, a fall or tipping over does not lead to paint damage.
The chassis also corresponds in its basic features to that of the journey-
Enduro. As with crossers, the compression level of the shock absorber can even be adjusted twice. The 950 R comes as a single-seater as standard, but can be fitted with pillion grass-
at lightning speed for passenger transport
to be repurposed. The rear of the vehicle can also handle additional loads with luggage if the customer tends towards on-road rather than off-road. As with the Supermoto, the battery is located under the seat, the oil tank in front of the engine, protected by a solid aluminum plate. The brakes are dimensioned for the terrain, the R version is content with a 300 disc with double-piston floating caliper at the front.
While the Adventure has recently been given the full-liter injection engine, the Super Enduro ?? as with the supermoto? initially with the 950 carburettor engine. For the time being, because the Euro 3-capable injector is due by 2008 at the latest. Bad Ge-
The enduro rider doesn’t need to know anything, with catalytic converters and Euro-2-
Even the 950 version is not homologated.
Maybe the carburetor engine
anyway for the intended use-
area the better choice. Because from the first few meters it becomes clear: The 950 hangs very sensitively, not at all poisonous on the gas. By making changes to the engine-
management, the technicians have made the throttle response even gentler in the partial load range, which is a decisive criterion in view of the nominal power of almost 100 hp off-road. Anyone who has ever driven a 525 single cylinder knows that even 55 hp can be pretty mean. Almost twice as much power, no one can implement it
it is more about managing the abundance halfway graciously.
Which is not difficult with the new KTM. The two-cylinder behaves very well, so that
the Über-Enduro can be easily chauffeured over the scree. The only irritating thing is that you are sitting quite far from the handlebars. With the compact dimensions
The twin cannot be compared to modern single-cylinder, where you can slide up to the handlebars. And the tank builds
also not as narrow as the design
suggests in the silhouette view. Otherwise, the ergonomics fit perfectly both sitting and standing.
The suspension is soft as butter, and the considerable masses are sure to be helpful. The decisive factor in such an off-road tank is the wide adjustment range of the damper elements. If you are planning brutal hardcore action, you should turn off the damper screws if possible to avoid crashing landings or penetrating deep holes, but then you have to live with reduced comfort.
With the 950 as a speed machine, the faster flat stages are more popular. On the sweeping gravel roads and the endless ramps of the Erzberg, the stiff chassis provides an infinite amount of stability, so that you can walk with something
Trust in God full barrel over stones,
Can hammer holes and bumps. No single-cylinder makes it so confidently. And not at such a pace, we
talking about clearly over 160 km / h.
When braking, the 200
Kilos can be felt, but they are finely dosed-
Hard, not too snappy Brembo parts prevent adrenaline rushes. Stress only comes up in tight, slippery turns. The high Ge in relation to every single-
importance cannot be denied. The Super Enduro pushes ahead powerfully-
derrad, simply doesn’t want to build up grip, wide arches and helpless paddling with your feet are the result. And crawling onto the tank to put pressure on the front wheel doesn’t work because of the steeply rising bench.
It may be that the tires are not particularly helpful in such situations. The Metzeler Karoo combines acceptable asphalt suitability with decent off-road properties, but it remains a compromise. A coarse studded tire would work better off-road, but 100 HP and 200 kilos would pulverize it within a very short time. So you have to come to terms with the moderate interlocking and the diffuse border area of the Karoos.
The advantage of the Erzberg Hillclimb is that every curve is followed by a straight line on which you can stretch the cable as far as it will go. At least up to the summit. Because then it goes downhill, steeply over narrow descents, tricky forest passages and slippery stream beds. Amazing what can be done with this dream. It takes a while to lose your respect, but thanks to the large ground clearance and narrow construction, even rough rubble and steep steps are not insurmountable hurdles ?? as long as you roll cleanly and are not thrown out of the targeted lane. Once the 200 kilograms get into an unplanned lean, you should jump off quickly. Because who is buried under the colossus can be without strangers
Help barely free.
The mighty 950 cannot be compared with the off-road properties of a single cylinder. Instead, it opens up a wide range of possible uses with its power and the smooth but lively engine. Quasi a big LC4 Enduro. And the presentation was crowned with a crowning glory: David Knight defeated the archenemy, the BMW HP2, at the Erzbergrodeo from May 25th to 28th in the two-cylinder class, albeit with a very thin margin.
