Driving report Leitner Dieselwiesel 406
Oil burner
Startled, you want to pull your thumb off the starter button again, that’s how it hisses when gears mesh in a single cylinder. Then the first ignition: like a sledgehammer nailing an anvil. Pang! But the dry bop-bop-bop that pounds out of the tin can with the air filter as a suction noise on the left surpasses everything: it is a diesel! Before its rebirth as an oil burner, the Dieselwiesel was a perfectly normal Suzuki Marauder 125.
Bernhard Leitner, 36, motorcycle dealer, tinkerer and Kreidler fan from Undorf near Regensburg, puts motormaladen Marauders into healthy, new diesel hearts. Massive single-cylinder from Japan, designed as floor motors to operate power generators. With a certain degree of success: the first successful transplant from the end of 2003 has now turned into a small one
Series production has become. 34 Dieselwiesel has L.eitner built to this day, approved and sold with EU papers. Only parts of the chassis such as wheels, brakes and struts as well as the fittings have been taken over unchanged from the Suzuki. Leitner had the frame and tank welded around it, the exhaust was specially made by Sebring, the dry clutch and transmission were his own construction.
Pang-pang-pang, the little cruiser rolls from the yard with a slightly muffled Lanz sound. It is immediately noticeable that one thing does not fit at all: one expects rough vibrations to accompany the brutal explosions. In fact, only a moderate tremor can be felt in the handlebar ends and footpegs. Coupling and shifting is normal with the left. This works smoothly and unobtrusively, even if the shift lever leaves a somewhat diffuse feeling. On the other hand, accelerating is completely unusual: real precision work is required on the handle. Only when the direct injection is really nicely on the gas does it react to a soulful pull-up with a gentle acceleration that is somehow meditative despite the jumble. If you give too much gas, you produce nothing but a cloud of black smoke. Once you get the hang of it, you can comfortably diesel-ride the Wiesel across the country. Up to 800 kilometers without refueling. Because the consumption is just as modest as the performance with a good 1.5 liters of inexpensive diesel per 100 kilometers. schu
